Richmond police have arrested a second suspect in the Sept. 24 arson of several AAA Self Storage units.
They arrested Dustin Lee Hess, 22, Friday when he arrived at a Richmond bus terminal, according to a news release from the Fire Department. Officials had provided his name and photo to the bus line's security because they believed he was a flight risk, according to the release.
Police charged Hess with two felony counts of arson, according to General District Court records. His last known address was in the 4700 block of Lone Willow Drive in Virginia Beach, according to the release. He is being held in the Richmond City Jail awaiting transport to Virginia Beach.
The arson occurred early the morning of Sept. 24 at the AAA Self Storage at 4656 Honeygrove Road. Fire crews responded and found five storage units on fire. It took roughly 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control, according to the release.
Four storage units suffered heavy fire damage and all of their contents were lost, according to the release. Three additional units were also damaged, but some of their contents may have been salvageable.
About a month after the fire, investigators arrested 22-year-old Joshua Hutchins of Horace Avenue and charged him with two counts of felony arson. They later obtained warrants for Hess’ arrest.
Fire investigators believe the suspects may have set the fire to cover up a burglary, said Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a Fire Department spokesman.
