Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Police identified today the woman who died this week after being struck by a minivan as 54-year-old Scarlet A. Harvell.

Harvell, who is originally from Florida, was here helping take care of her grandchildren, said her sister-in-law, Shirley Harvell. She declined to comment further.

Scarlet Harvell was living with family at a home in the 1000 block of Minneapolis Drive in the Midway Manor neighborhood, which offers enlisted Navy housing.

She was standing in the driveway Monday afternoon when the minivan backed up and an open door knocked her down, police said. She suffered a serious head injury and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

She died the next day.

Police said a family member was behind the wheel of the van but declined to provide additional information. No charges had been filed as of this afternoon.

Scarlet Harvell's family living on Minneapolis Drive declined an interview request.

Please pray for family

I am a neighbor of the family. The grandmother was staying there b/c her daughter died from breast cancer last year, and had 2 young children that the grandma was helping raise. This will be so hard for those kids, to lose their mom and then their grandma so soon afterwards. And imagine how the little girl feels, knowing she caused the minivan to roll backwards. Please pray for them, and especially the little girl.

Very sad.

It was reported earlier that the grandmother was helping to take care of her grandchildren, due to the death of their mother.

Ironically, one of the tykes somehow managed to get the vehicle in motion. Tragic.

My wife used to think I was paranoid for locking my car doors every time I exit the vehicle, even when we're visiting our kids and grandkids.

She has since reconsidered her position.

Yes

It is tragic and I feel so for this family.

So sad

This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

seriously??

This apparently was a tragic accident in which a woman was unloading groceries and a child may have shifted a gear in the car. I am guessing its still under investigation.

Your comment was cold and uncaring...a person died and you are making jokes about minivan drivers....good grief!!
