VIRGINIA BEACH
While Election Day marked the end of this year's political season, it represented the official start of one last contest: the race for state Sen. Ken Stolle's 8th District seat.
Stolle was elected Beach sheriff Tuesday, beating Democratic opponent John Bell and opening up the office Stolle's held since 1991.
Two Republicans, assuming Stolle would win, have been angling for the seat for six months. Democrats now find themselves playing catch-up without a definite candidate and a special election that probably will happen within 60 days.
"Our position up until Tuesday night was there wasn't going to be a special election because John Bell was going to be the next sheriff," said Ollie Bates, Beach Democratic Committee chairman.
With Democrats holding a 21-19 edge in the senate, Republicans are eager to keep the 8th District, which encompasses eastern Virginia Beach.
"It's a seat we can't afford to lose," Republican state Sen. Frank Wagner told a cheering crowd Tuesday night at a the local party's victory celebration.
Republicans Jeffrey McWaters, former CEO of Amerigroup Corp. and City Councilwoman Rosemary Wilson are vying for the spot. For months, McWaters and Wilson have had campaign signs up.
They will face each other in a primary, or "canvas," that could happen in early December. A general election, still to be set by the governor, would follow, probably in early January.
The only possible Democratic candidate discussed openly Wednesday was Beach lawyer Sonny Stallings. Stallings, who held the 8th District seat from 1987 until 1991 before losing to Stolle, said he'll decide whether he's running by Monday.
"Money is always the big issue," he said. "If you're going to compete in a short election cycle, you've got to be a player. You can't just say, 'Vote for me.' "
McWaters has attracted $166,000 in campaign contributions, which includes $50,000 of his own money. Wilson has raised $30,500, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, which tracks campaign contributions.
Stolle said he'd like to see only Republican candidates in the race to avoid a primary. He said he is not supporting either one at this time.
"It's counterproductive to have a fight within the party," he said.
McWaters was the largest donor to Stolle's campaign for sheriff. He gave Stolle almost $17,000, according to campaign records.
Bates said Democrats are determined to field a candidate. "We'll see who comes forward," he said. "We're going to kick it into high gear right away."

did I miss something
I thought the Republican's already promised the seat to Paul Langtaine ?
Hubris
Why are taxpayers stuck with the cost of a special election for a Va Beach Senate seat? Because Ken Stolle wanted to hedge his bet on the Sheriff's office. Otherwise, the new Senator could have been elected this week.
Senator Stolle won his bet tripling his retirement pay for only four years of full-time work. Congratulations!
Even in the midst of the Greatest Depression, leaders of the Republicrat Party remain solely focused on how they can game the taxpayers.
Ignorant
That's the dumbest suggestion ever. You know nothing about politics. Hate hate hate. That's all you do. What a shame. I'll pray for you.
Mindless
Mr.Phillips,
Spare us your super-natural beliefs.
How about commenting on how a State Senator deserves an extra $1m or so in retirenment pay for hanging around the jail fcr a few years.
Sheriff-elect's retirement
Mr Merrill,
Please tell me how Sheriff Solle is getting a million dollar retirement. I'm under the same retirement system and would love to boost my retirement to that. You have NO idea what you're talking about.
A Free Lesson
Mr or Ms. BM49136,
Let me tell how your retirement system works.
Mr. Stolle's retirement pay will be based on the average of his highest three years of State salary. He was paid $18,000/yr for six weeks work as State Senator. For the next four years he will be paid $165,000/yr as Sheriff thereby increasing his pay calculation number by more than NINEFOLD.
If your long service with the State leaves you with the talent to use a calculator, run the final numbers for yourself
.
I suggest you do your research before saying people do not know what they are talking about.
As such a strong supporter of the new Sheriff, will you volunteer the cost for the upcoming, unnecessary Special Election?
Just what we need
The Amerigroup CEO in the senate...maybe he can start denying coverage to the poor in VA too!
Huh?
For you ignorance (which you show in spades) is bliss.
Ignorant...really?
From the July 24, 2008 Medical News Today:
"Amerigroup on Tuesday said it will enter a $225 million settlement agreement with Illinois and the federal government over allegations that it denied coverage to eligible pregnant women, the Baltimore Sun reports (Baltimore Sun, 7/23)."
From the November 7, 2006 InjuryBoard.com:
"After two days of deliberations, the jury found that Amerigroup Corp. and subsidiary Amerigroup Illinois sought to fatten their profits off Medicaid dollars paid into their plans by signing up healthy clients and intentionally avoiding those who had health issues.
According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, the original award was $48 million, but under the federal False Claims Act it will be tripled to $144 million in what amounts to a major victory for federal and state prosecutors."
Not only does Jeff have my vote...
he has my support. For starters, he's a good man just in general, and I know he will help Virginians in the best way. If you want what's best for yourself, your city, and others in this state, cast your vote for HIM...Jeff McWaters will work wonders for us. This is the man you want to represent you!
open senate seat
There is no one on the democratic side better to represent the City of Virginia Beach and could do a GREAT job as a state senator then the Honorable Meyera Obendorf. I am not sure of the ins and outs of running for that position, but if she is able to run for that seat, maybe brother Ollie should approach her. She would do a great job as she has for 30 years to keep our fair city and state moving forward.
