Raleigh Isaacs Sr. won his fifth term as sheriff by an overwhelming majority.

He led Army veteran and political newcomer Jay Clason with more than 70 percent of the votes late Tuesday, with most precincts reporting to the State Board of Elections.

Isaacs said the results showed people chose qualifications and experience. "I think the citizens sent a loud and clear message."

Clason said he wanted to make the office of sheriff more conspicuous by putting deputies on patrol across the city. He called it a home for retired police officers and said deputies did little more than guard the courthouse.

Isaacs, 69, called his challenger's criticisms typical of a novice who doesn't understand how a city sheriff's office operates. He said his employees were busy carrying out the duties outlined in the state code, which includes civil enforcement and courthouse security.

He said he plans to continue running an efficient department.
