Residents protest proposed go-kart park in Outer Banks

COROLLA

A  park with a go-kart track proposed for Corolla has drawn opposition from residents there who say it would bring a Myrtle Beach-type atmosphere.

Developer Israel Golasa, who also owns Wings stores and Beach Mart Inc., plans to build a fun park on 3.3 acres that would include an arcade, a 36-hole miniature golf course and a go-kart track.

The site sits across N.C. 12 from the Food Lion complex and lies just north of the TimBuck II commercial area.

Plans are to open by next summer.

After a public hearing, Golasa must get a special-use permit from commissioners. A public hearing has not been scheduled, but opposition is expected.

"We have this already in TimBuck II," said Corolla resident Bob Schultz. "I don't think we need more of it."

Corolla has a unique residential character that is not found in other tourist destinations, Schultz said. Commercial developments like this could make Corolla more like Myrtle Beach, he said.

Officials with TimBuck II, a commercial district that includes a go-kart track and miniature golf, oppose the fun park, said Tim Rary, an executive board member on TimBuck II's business association and manager of Corolla Raceway, a go-kart track.

"No one over here is happy," Rary said.

Parking would be insufficient, wetlands would be negatively affected and the drainage pond there could not handle additional flow, Rary said.

Corolla residents have often opposed new commercial developments. Community objections have led to strict ordinances that keep businesses small and require unobtrusive outdoor lighting.

The project has most of its permits, meets county development requirements and will have a low profile that blends in, said John DeLucia of Albemarle & Associates, engineer for the project.

"It really is a special place up there," DeLucia said. "But it still needs things for the family and kids to do."

Getting a special-use permit requires a quasi-judicial hearing before the Board of Commissioners. If a developer meets all requirements, the law requires commissioners to issue the permit, said Ben Woody, director of the Currituck County Planning Department.

Opponents must present evidence or testimony from an expert that a development would harm the community, such as lower property values, he said.

"They can't just say no because people don't like it," he said.

The project still has obstacles, including parts that may sit within a wastewater spray disposal area for Monteray Shores treatment plant and some facilities that could disturb wetlands, said Donna Voliva, a county planner.

The 3.3-acre fun park would sit within 38.25 acres, including a drainage pond, open space and wetlands.

Give me a break

Corolla will NEVER be the Hamptons of Long Island, so don't even try to go there. When families come for vacation, there is nothing in Corolla for mom, dad, & kids to do, but lay on the beach, sit beside the pool, or be inside in the air conditioning. With everything going on in the world today, you would think that people would crave to be with their children in anyway that they can.

I don't see the issue with a small race trak, & mini golf. Folks come down to Kill Devil Hills all summer long for them, and then they eat down here as well.

The residents of Corolla just want to pretend they are living in the Hamptons of Long Island, or Palm Beach, Florida when in reality, they are living in Cape May!

Limits

Instead of limiting vacationers, look BIG....no BIGGER....I mean HUGE!

CAsinos for Virginia and CArolina...come on people, limiting the activities to attract a small number of people is a waste of time, money, and effort...lets bring back all the travelers that go out of town to Dover Downs, and Harrington...only 3.5 hours away, Atlantic city, only a 5.5 hour drive not including the ferry ride.. Charlestown WV...5 hours....Imean...hello???

We are losing our own people in DROVES because Virginia and Carolina is so darn BORING and limited in any kind of activities, whereas these casinos offer, shows, clubs, nite life, gambling, gourmet dining...etc etc...something for everyone!

Even the kids get to play at the massive kiddie pools that are built just for them!

Geez....

I will NEVER call it the OBX

And I can certainly understand why local residents would be opposed to a 3.3 go kart/arcade/mini-golf complex. Especially when there is a smaller but vacant area further south where the old amusement part was.

"Make Corolla more like Myrtle Beach"..??

What ARE you people taking down there that allows you such delusions of grandeur...?

I refuse to call it OBX

always have and always will. I like to tailgate people with those stickers.

Residents protest proposed go-kart park in Outer Banks...

because they have nothing better to do in the off season.

They're finally getting the hint....

I guess all the dixie-stampeder-crowds have given up on their antics to promote a gauche and callow Virginia Beach and have moved on to the Outer Banks. Who knows, maybe if they're successful down there, they can turn one of those pristine beaches into a Walmart or a used car lot a long with their NASCAR go-cart tracks.

why?

why in this economy would someone want to keep business out? I only thought Chowan County did that!

Some people are dead set

Some people are dead set against change and will find any reason to oppose change.
