Rizen - 'Free'

RizenRizen always mixes contemporary flavor with retro sounds to deliver a message of Christianity .

On “Free,” (Verity) the Michigan natives mix several sounds, allowing listeners with varying preferences to pick their favorites. Mellow music lovers who enjoy a slight mid-tempo groove get first dibs on Rizen’s latest with “He’ll Make a Way,” “Ridiculous” and the title track. “He’ll Make a Way” has Sunday-morning flavor, with choir backup and sweeping organs throughout. The title track leans more toward radio play, while “Ridiculous” is a happy medium.

A three-song worship medley follows. Soothing ballads invoke reverence and are the highlights of the project. Fred Hammond jumps on board for the first of the three – “Live to Love.” “I Owe It All to You” rounds out that set.

“Dance” is an upbeat segue to three upbeat tracks filled with heavy classic gospel influences. It’s definitely not for those loyal to contemporary gospel. Think foot-stomping, marching music.

All in all, “Free” is a great purchase for gospel music lovers.
