A small plane registered in Virginia Beach crashed in South Carolina on Monday morning, sending three people to the hospital and causing the closure of part of a state highway.
The multi-engine King Air B200 crashed short of the runway at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport around 10:15 a.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.
The plane is registered to MDTR Holdings LLC at the Beach address of ECPI College of Technology. President Mark Dreyfus could not be reached for comment Monday, but chief financial officer Greg Casey said the school does not own the plane.
Three men were injured in Monday’s crash, including the pilot and two employees of Stevens Aviation, which repairs and maintains small aircraft in Greenville. The pilot is an MDTR employee. The plane was registered under the name of Richmond-based corporate lawyer William J. Newman Jr., who did not return phone calls Monday afternoon.
The plane flew from Norfolk International Airport to Greenville on Sunday night, ahead of its scheduled service Monday, said Neal McGrail, chief operations officer at Stevens. At the time of the crash, the plane was on a test flight at the pilot’s request, similar to a test drive of a car at a mechanic’s shop, McGrail said.
The plane had been brought in for a routine check, he said. McGrail declined to release the names of the pilot or passengers and said he did not know the extent of their injuries.
The plane crashed while attempting to land, hitting a guard rail and skipping over S.C. 14 before eventually landing on grass, airport spokeswoman Rosylin Weston told the Greenville News. No cars were hit.
There was no fire and the aircraft appeared to be intact, Weston said.
Pilot writer Lauren Roth and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
