Storm drives tires onto Assateague Island beach

Posted to: News Eastern Shore

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE, Md.

Thousands of tires from a man-made underwater tire reef have washed up on the shore of Assateague Island as a result of last week's storm.

Assateague Island National Seashore spokeswoman Rachelle Daigneault said today that close to 2,000 tires are on the beach.Crews and volunteers will start clearing them away Wednesday, she said, and the tires will be taken to a facility in Ocean City for disposal. The tires were probably from a reef off Ocean City, Daigneault said. Tire reefs were built in many places in an attempt to foster marine life.

A good portion of Assateague Island's southern part was flooded, and crews planned a helicopter flight today to further assess the damage.

The Assateague Island National Seashore is off the Virginia and Maryland coasts.

Seems like another...

fly ash scheme. Dump your waste and call it ecologically beneficial. Until something like this happens and everyone realizes they've been duped.

Ecological fiasco.

So from start to finish (when these tires are finally collected, transported, and disposed of), what was the ecological cost/benefit?

Kinda

obvious your both the same person posting on two accounts.
