One firefighter was being treated for heat exhaustion after battling a kitchen blaze at a home in the 100 block of Nansemond Pointe Drive, a city spokeswoman said.

No one was home when the fire was reported shortly after 10 a.m., said Debbie George, the spokeswoman. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the two-story home. The fire was under control by 11:40 a.m.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, George said.

The firefighter was treated at the scene, and George said she did not know if he would be taken to a hospital.
