Eastern Region quarterfinals

Lakeland 4, Ocean Lakes 0

Lakeland took advantage of its second and third chances to advance to the semifinals of the Eastern Region field hockey tournament.

Taylor Young and Alyssa Chirico knocked in goals off rebounds in the circle as the Southeastern District’s top-seeded Cavaliers (18-1) blanked Beach District No. 2 Ocean Lakes 4-0 Tuesday at the National Training Center.

“We put a lot of pressure on (Dolphins keeper Heidi Pomposini),” said Kendall Combs, who added a pair of second-half tallies. “She’s very good and their defense was on us. The corners really helped us out.”

Though Ocean Lakes (12-5) was able to move the ball, it had trouble stringing passes together closer to the Cavaliers’ cage due to the tenacity in the backline’s stick challenges.

“Our defense was great today,” Lakeland coach Tara Worley said. “We put a lot of pressure on them and made sure there weren’t any uncontested shots.”

Young was able to get a stick on a loose ball to put Lakeland ahead just five minutes in, following a number of shots in a penalty corner situation.

Play bogged down in the middle as the clock ticked toward halftime – the Dolphins started to clamp down on midfielder Kelsey Smither by circling her with as many as five defenders.

“Ocean Lakes did a good job of forcing us to change our game,” Worley said. “They came in knowing what we do and how to defend it.”

With a 1-0 lead going into the second half, Worley instructed Smither to break through the defensive circle, accelerate and find options. The Cavaliers responded with a cage-crashing goal off a rebound by Chirico less than three minutes after the restart.

And as Lakeland started to pull away, the defense kept up its relentless pressure.

“We wanted to contain them and we really didn’t want them to score,” defender Olivia Graham said.

The win sets up a rematch at 1 p.m. Thursday against Peninsula No. 2 seed Kecoughtan. The Cavaliers won 1-0 in mid-October on a Smither goal in the final moments.

G--Young, Chirico, Combs 2.

Cox 6, Western Branch 0

Kelsey Rosenmeier notched a hat trick to power the three-time defending region champion Falcons (20-0).

Cox’s suffocating offense limited the Bruins (11-7-1) to a handful of counterattacks and finished with a 14-1 advantage in shots.

“We worked on channeling their forwards and midfielders to our defense,” Rosenmeier said.

Jessica Diaz had the Southeastern District No.2 seed’s lone scoring opportunity, but Liz Beckner kicked away her blast from the right side of the circle with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

G--Rosenmeier 3, Rhea 2, Witte.

Kecoughtan 3, Maury 0

Paige Doughty scored the opening goal 10 minutes in as the Warriors (15-4) knocked off the Eastern District top-seed Commodores (12-5).

Caitlin Smith added a second goal less than seven minutes after the second-half restart.

“After the second goal, they really let it get into our heads,” Commodores coach Jo Ann van Aswegen said. “They didn’t play the game – they let the score take over.”

Maury played without star Tollie Bell, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament late in the regular season.

G--Paige Doughty, Caitlin Smith, Morgan Pabst.

Gloucester 3, Granby 0

Kristie Hoeffer scored twice to fuel the Peninsula No. 1 seed Dukes (16-3-1).

Megan Stout opened the scoring for the victors, who advance to face Cox in Thursday’s 3 p.m. semifinal.

The Eastern District second-seeded Comets finished at 9-8.
