VIRGINIA BEACH

Cox welcomed first-time state tournament qualifier Cosby with a dominating performance Tuesday at the National Training Center

Four players scored in the opening 10 minutes as the Falcons sped to a 4-0 lead en route to a 13-0 thrashing in the Group AAA quarterfinals.

“We just came out fired up,” said Cara Witte, who led the way with four goals. “We put one in to get the flow going, and we kept pounding them in.”

Lakeland beat Thomas Dale 2-0 in another quarterfinal in Richmond, so both Eastern Region teams advanced to Friday’s semis. Cox will face South County at 1p.m., and Lakeland will play Mountain View at 3 p.m.

Taylor Rhea finished with three goals for the three-time defending state champion Falcons, who led 7-0 at halftime.

Ashby Whitehorne and Mallory Roach came off the bench and had a goal apiece for the victors, who totaled 36 shots and 25 penalty corners.

The Falcons (24-0) played much of the second half with just nine field players, before Cox coach Julie Swain fielded a senior-laden line-up for the final eight minutes. They limited Cosby (19-3-1) to one shot off its only penalty corner with less than 13 minutes left.

“I was trying to make it more competitive,” Swain said. “They had to work on covering and moving into the extra space.

“I want them to be ready for Friday.”

In Richmond, Kelsey Smither had a goal and an assist as the Cavaliers topped Thomas Dale (16-2-1) on the bumpy, grass field at Maggie Walker Governor’s School.

“It was tough,” said Lakeland coach Tara Worley, whose team last played on a natural field in early October. “… We practice on grass, but you couldn’t prepare for this field.”

Jennifer Hedrick put Lakeland (20-2) ahead 1-0 midway through the first half when she tipped in Smither’s cross from the left. Smither doubled her team’s lead six minutes into the second half.

“The kids did a good job of not letting (the field) be their focus and just playing through it,” said Worley, whose team finished with a 12-2 advantage in corners and an 18-8 edge in shots.

The online version of this

The online version of this article has more class than the newspaper version. In the newspaper, the headline to this story is "Cox wins a laugher over Cosby".

Really low class. Yes, Cosby got badly beaten 13-0. To use the word "laugher" in the headline ridicules them.
