Va. commission releasing state jobless figures today

Posted to: Business Jobs and Workplace Virginia

The Virginia Employment Commission is expected today to release unemployment figures for October, the Associated Press is reporting.

In September, the rate of unemployment in Hampton Roads edged up to 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent, according to the agency announced last month.

Jobs in the retail and tourism industry saw decreases in September. The jobless rate in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk stayed the same or dropped, while rates in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake rose.

The state's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in September.

Contradictory Figures Being Reported

Reported on bloomberg.com today:
"Payrolls declined last month in 21 states, today’s report showed. New York showed the biggest drop, with a loss of 15,300. Florida had 8,500 job losses, followed by Georgia with 7,500 and Virginia with 7,100."

Reported in the Pilot today:
"The U.S. Labor Department reported Friday that Virginia's jobless rate for October was 6.6 percent..."
"In September, the rate of unemployment in Hampton Roads edged up to 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent, according to the agency (Virginia Employment Commission) announced last month."

6.6% unemployment would indicate we actually gained jobs last month if we are to believe what was reported in the Pilot today. How does that sqaure with a net loss of 7,100 jobs in October? November and the months ahead are shaping up to be pretty ugly as well with 2,500 layoffs at AOL and roughly 1,700 reported here in Hampton Roads in recent weeks (as well as all the others around the state).
