A police officer was injured Tuesday morning after being dragged by a car during a traffic stop.
Shortly before noon, the officer stopped a car near Euclid Road and Independence Boulevard, according to a news release. When he obtained the driver's information, he learned the man was wanted on charges of attempted grand larceny, grand larceny and conspiracy, said Officer Margie Hobbs, a police spokeswoman.
When the officer approached the vehicle, the driver attempted to start the car and the officer grabbed his arm to stop him from fleeing. The driver then sped away, dragging the officer for several feet before the officer was able to free his arm, police said.
The driver then continued westbound onto Interstate 264, Hobbs said.
The officer suffered cuts and bruises and was transported to a hospital for treatment, police said. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
Investigators have obtained warrants for the arrest of 30-year-old Christopher R. Dennis of the 1600 block of Stratford St. in Portsmouth. He faces multiple charges, including assault and battery, resisting arrest and reckless driving, Hobbs said.
Dennis was driving a blue, 2000 Dodge Intrepid with Virginia tag XRK3838, police said.
