Rwayne Walton has a history of working for winners.
He volunteered for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He worked on Donald McEachin's successful campaign for state Senate, in Henrico County.
For the past six days, though, he's been volunteering for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds, who lags in polls against Republican opponent Bob McDonnell.
"How do I feel about coming out here and putting the effort in for what might not be a winning campaign?" Walton said. "Sometimes you got to go down with the ship. I'll give him my support whether he's winning or losing, and maybe I'll be giving him the extra support he needs that'll get him over the hump."
Both Deeds and McDonnell were in Hampton Roads on Sunday to stage last-minute rallies. With two days until the election, the candidates urged supporters to keep up their efforts.
"Polls don't vote - people do. And we're going to have to have your help," McDonnell told a crowd gathered at Chesapeake's Republican Party headquarters. "Knock on a door, send out a last e-mail, put up a last couple of signs."
McDonnell field manager Christie Craig said her Chesapeake office would spend the next two days doing "pretty much what we've been doing the whole campaign" - phone banking and knocking on doors.
But, she said, because the McDonnell campaign has been in full swing since April, the need for a big push in the last few days i s not great.
"Everybody forgets it's a marathon, it's not a sprint," McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin said.
The Deeds campaign especially is counting on get-out-the-vote efforts to make up the gap between him and McDonnell, which a recent poll measured at 12 percentage points, with McDonnell making gains among likely Hampton Roads voters as well as independents.
In a memo to media organizations, Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey emphasized that the campaign still had access to the organization that won Virginia for Obama last year.
"We are moving into the get-out-the-vote phase of the campaign with one of the best field operations in the nation," he wrote.
"We have made hundreds of thousands of contacts in the last week and will be doubling those efforts in the final days of the campaign."
Deeds was scheduled to make stops at six Hampton Roads locations Sunday. At his Norfolk campaign office, where supporters were getting ready to canvass neighborhoods, Deeds told them he could still win - with enough commitment from them.
"If you give us these two days - and sleep is vastly overrated - if you give us these two days, we will give you four years like you've never seen," Deeds told volunteers.
Walton, who was making phone calls at the office Sunday, said he'll keep showing up until voting i s over.
"There are a lot of phone calls still left to be made, a lot of doors left to be knocked," he said. "I'm trying to sprint at the end."

Every Vote Counts
In 1998, the U.S. bishops published "Living the Gospel of Life," in which they encouraged all American citizens, particularly Catholics, to exercise their right to vote. "Every voice matters in the public forum. Every vote counts," the bishops wrote. "Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power. We must exercise that power in ways that defend human life, especially those of God's children who are unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable."
Sometimes we don't believe that every vote counts, but it counts in many ways, and one of those ways is in our own spiritual life. What we do not only has an effect (small or large) on the world around us, but also has an effect on the world inside us. To become informed about the issues of our day, the positions of all the candidates, and then to vote according to our conscience, constitutes a significant expression of who we are. Convictions that are expressed -- by voting, for example -- are convictions that are made stronger within us. The act of voting goes a long way toward answering the question of our conscience, "Have I played the role I could play, no matter how small, in my section of the sta
Yo all particpants...
For all Pilot blog participants, there will be a ‘meet and greet’ this Thursday at 6PM at The Fossil Rock Inn, Ste 108 1457 Mt Pleasant Rd, Chesapeake, VA 23322-3919
(757) 389-5301.
Hope you can make it, if you can’t, we always try to have one every 6 weeks or so. We’re always looking for venues to hold them at. We’ve had 2 in a restaurant in Ghent, this is the first at this location in Chesapeake. All participants are welcome, as are any ideas for these things. Hope to see you.
To all you left wing
To all you left wing socialist democrats....This is just the beginning. Democrats are going to be scrambling for cover, Obama will lose his clout, and the 2010 elections will hopefully remove the likes of Harry Reid from office and ultimately lead to the elimination of Pelosi and Frank from power. We can only hope, but for now things are looking up. Change is a comin'!!!!!
Same stuff different day
As usual, the Deeds supporters can't give reasons to vote for for their candidate, instead resorting to their only viable tactic - attacking his opponent. Support the party at all costs, right?
You know the dems are desperate when they start comparing McD to Palin. LOL. What next?
A third party?
Maybe, but the reason the two current parties are so corrupt is the entrenchment of so many members. People who have been there so long they have lost touch with those whom they represent. Their number one interest is themselves and the power they think they weild. Make a real difference in government. Tell the politicians who is really in charge. Starting tomorrow, do not re-elect an incumbent. The party amd media establishment would be knocked on their ear. The new blood in the halls of government, local, state and national would have respect for the power of those whom they represent. Maybe they would even pay attention to us.
Vote-it's your duty
Vote Tuesday.

SAM BEAR's COMMENTS
Sam Bear should research the entire story/subject before condeming those in Authority that have to make the decisions about the Federal Grants that would assist unemployment benefits. Do you realize that for those States that accepted that Federal Grant Money, those State then would have to increase the amount of money they have to pay for unemployment benefits for the long term (forever) therefore, in the long run it will cost those States more money than it saved if accepting the Federal money now. Obama's plans have only been quick fixes that everyone will have to pay for later. Look at the National debt! Same with the Unemployment Grant money. Take it now and pay more later. I think the decision was a sound one made by those states that didn't want to be more in-debt later. Understand all of the facts before comdeming.
Virginia Cannot Afford Bob McDonnell Or The Republican Delegates
Sorry Dave! You are mistaken! I suggest that you reread my post and the link for meaning! The GA could have passed the enabling legislation, received the $125 million, and then have voted to repeal the enabling legislation in late 2010. There was no long term commitment, unless the GA chose to keep the two options. Yes, the GA has repealed unemployment benefits in the past. One of the four options, from which the GA had to choose two, had actually been included in the unemployment system as a benefit, until the GA repealed it several years ago.
Again, I suggest that you reread, for meaning, my post and the link!
Have A Great Day!!!
long term commitment
A funny twist there, Sam. What you are saying is that it was indeed a long term commitment, but with a way out. If it walks like a duck, etc...
And of course, passing the legislation would have been used against them so it's a no-win from a campaign standpoint anyway. Just as voting to repeal in 2010 would be used against them as well.
You folks that have the ability to read what's in the hearts and minds of our elected officials really shouldn't be wasting your time on these forums with the likes of us.
yawn
Can we do over the primaries instead tomorrow?
