Awards recognize efforts to improve Beach traffic safety

VIRGINIA BEACH

Drive Safe Hampton Roads, a regional traffic safety group, recognized 11 law enforcement agencies, city departments and individuals Tuesday for their efforts to make the roads safer.

They each received a John T. Hanna Award for Traffic Safety Excellence for programs including curbing drunken driving by Navy sailors and helping pedestrians cross streets more safely. The recipients included:

  • The Beach Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit and U.S. Fleet Forces Command Alcohol and Drug Control Officers for Impaired Driving Prevention.
  • The Newport News Police Department's Motor Carrier Unit and Newport News police Officer Scott A. Mounger for Law Enforcement Initiatives.
  • The Beach Department of Traffic Engineering and Mary Ann Rayment of the DMV's Virginia Highway Safety Office for Traffic Safety Activism.
  • The Newport News Police Department's Stop! School Bus Safety Program for Pupil Transportation Safety.
