VIRGINIA BEACH

Nearly three months after being convicted of drunken driving, Bryan K. Womble is no longer employed by the city's Police Department, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

After a car crash at the Oceanfront on June 20, Womble was charged with hit-and-run and drunken driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.15. He was off duty at the time.

A General District Court judge convicted Womble on Sept. 21 and sentenced him to five days in jail, which he served last month. The judge also suspended his driver's license for a year and ordered him to pay $500 in fines, attend alcohol safety awareness classes, and use an ignition interlock device for six months.

Womble, 37, joined the police force in 2002. He was a celebrated member of the Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit, formerly the Selective Enforcement Team. The unit specializes in stopping impaired driving. On May 15, he arrested retired NFL star Bruce Smith for DUI.

Womble was put on administrative duty after his arrest and suspended without pay after his conviction, said Officer Adam Bernstein.

Bernstein declined to provide further details, saying it's a personnel matter. Womble's last day was Tuesday, he said.

Need I say more

Womble

"Nearly three months after being convicted of drunken driving, Bryan K. Womble is no longer employed by the city's Police Department"

Accountability.

Womble

They didn't fire him as they should have....they suspended him without pay!

Bring on Bruce Smith's

appeal for DUI. I don't think former officer Womble will be there to testify. Case dismissed!

He should have received more

He should have received more jail time because he, more than most, knew how fatal DUI can be. And the fine also limp. A lot of traffic offenses, not as serious, will garner you about or almost the same fine. Potential loss of job is of course a serious consequence, but should not eradicate more severe punishment through the above consequences.

ITS about TIME

There is no reason he got such a lite sentance, not to mention allwoing him back into work.

The Law should be much tougher for Hit and runs when DUI is involved!
maybe attempted manslaughter, or something along those lines!

RE: God Will Watch the Watchers....

Sometimes,just watching isnt enough...............

Termination was the Only Option

Any City employee convicted of DUI is going to be terminated.

I personally feel for anyone losing their job so near to the holidays, but there was no choice.

The message here is if you drink and drive, you lose.

what took so long?

so the taxpayers paid him these last almost 3 months?
