Candy bomber to drop chocolates on children at festival

Posted to: Entertainment Festivals North Carolina

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C.

A First in Flight Festival will be held at the Elizabeth City Regional Airport Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It will feature airplane flights for children, a remote control air show and retired Air Force Lt. Gail Halvorsen, the renowned Candy Bomber. He will be dropping chocolate "bombs" to children as one of the highlights of the festival.

Halvorsen gained worldwide attention after World War II when he began dropping packs of candy by tiny parachutes into parts of Berlin controlled by the Soviet Union. In recent years he has made appearances all over the country in the restored model of the 1945 Douglas C54E, “Spirit of Freedom,” the aircraft he used on the candy drop missions.

Included in the events will be a tour of the DRS Technologies hangar with the overhaul of a C-130 in progress.
