A grand jury certified murder and felony child neglect charges Tuesday against the father and stepmother in the death of 5-year-old Carly Sawyer.
Joshua Sawyer, 25, is charged with second-degree murder and felony child neglect. His wife, Brandy, 21, is charged with first-degree murder and felony child neglect. Workers answering a 911 call found Carly at home June 10. She died June 11 at a hospital. Prosecutors and police say she was beaten and bound by her father and stepmother and suffered from malnutrition. A hearing is scheduled for January.

Lord, why do people even have children if they are going to treat/harm them in such a way? In the photo of the father and step-mother, the father looks as if he is going to cry while the step-mother looks as if she could care less. Then you look at Carly's photo and you want to cry...

My question is HOW did this man end up with custody in the first place?

SAD SAD SAD
This is sad for the entire family and the people of the world that struggle to give birth and cant have kids of there own...i say that because there was a million options for them instead of starving this beautiful 5yr old child(baby) they could have gave custody to the grandparents or social services with no questions asked they couldve even dropped the baby off at the hospital and left without worrying bout any charges or questions! Instead they take the hardest way out possible by killing this baby by beating and starving this poor child.....im speechless much as we hate to realize these things happen right here in hampton roads its just not foreign parts of the world...sad sad sad
