A world-renowned surgeon, an internationally known educator and “the hardest-working man in radio” are among the speakers at December commencement services in Hampton Roads.
Close to 4,000 students are eligible to graduate from local colleges and universities during the next two weeks. Here’s a rundown:
Norfolk State University: 10 a.m. Saturday at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall Arena. The processional begins at 9:30 a.m. The speaker is Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated morning program “The Tom Joyner Morning Show,” carried locally on WKUS-FM 105.3 . He’s been known for years as “the hardest-working man in radio.” Guests are required to have an admission ticket, and seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a limited number of tickets at the box office. The ceremony will be streamed live at ww.nsu.edu.
Old Dominion University: Two ceremonies, 9 a.m, and 2 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The 9 a.m. speaker is Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, director of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. Carson has been named by CNN and Time magazine as one of the nation’s foremost physicians and scientists. He is author of the autobiography “Gifted Hands.”
At the 2 p.m. ceremony, the speaker is Marilyn Tam, a corporate consultant, author and executive director and founder of the Us Foundation. Tam, along with Cathie Black, president of Hearst magazines, and Sheila Johnson, co-founder of BET Networks, was featured in “The Glow Project,” a documentary movie released in 2008 aimed at empowering women. Both ceremonies will be streamed live at www.odu.edu. Tidewater Community College: 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Constant Center. University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III, who is retiring next year, will speak. The event can be viewed at www.tcc.edu after the event.
