PORTSMOUTH

A Coast Guard cutter based in Portsmouth seized about 6,000 pounds of cocaine from a vessel in the Caribbean Sea earlier this month, the Coast Guard said Tuesday.

The cutter Harriet Lane intercepted the Olympiakos on Dec. 3, seizing the cocaine and detaining 11 people, a Coast Guard statement said. The ship is registered in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The drugs and people detained were turned over to federal law enforcement authorities in the United States.

The Olympiakos came under suspicion by the crew of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft, which called the Coast Guard to intercept it.
