Foodie fortune: Five predicted trends for 2010

Posted to: Food Spotlight

Burgers and formal dinner parties are out. Hibiscus and cocktail atomizers are in. Here are five predictions for 2010 in the world of food.

Fried chicken goes upscale
Put this one in the "If you're going to sin, sin boldly" category. Epicurious.com predicts that fried chicken will turn up increasingly on the menus of even the most upscale of restaurants. Meanwhile, burgers will take a slide.

The Peruvian invasion is here
It's already touched down here with the opening of Peruvian restaurants in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, but food watchers say to expect more Peruvian eateries as well as native dishes such as ceviche on menus.

Punch hits the big time
Break out Grandma's punch bowl, and move over sangria. In the industry, they're called "communal cocktails" - a mixture of spirits, spice, citrus, sugar and water. Expect restaurants and bars to be ladling punches even after the holiday season has passed.

Foodies breed 'koodies'
It was bound to happen. A generation of foodies has led to koodies, their sharp-palated progeny. "These kids want sushi, pad Thai or smoked salmon in their Happy Meal," said Phil Lempert, a food trends analyst. It's a positive trend that "lays the groundwork for more positive associations with food," he said.

Koodies...

I don't know if this falls under the foodie religion per se, but I think koodies have already arrived. Not as much in the food portion of food & beverage, but in the beverage portion of food & beverage. And most of it in the way of coffee. My 14 year old daughter got over $150 in Starbucks gift cards over Christmas. Her school softball team did a white elephant party and only 1 person didn't bring a Starbucks gift card, and that gift was a Starbucks Via instant coffee gift set! When I was 14, if you offered me coffee, I would have said "Gross. Coffee is nasty and for old people!" :)

She likes sushi and can't stand ketchup, though I'm not proud of that one, I'm still trying to get her to like ketchup, LOL!
