NORFOLK
What was supposed to be fast and fun turned a bit furious at Old Dominion University’s Perry Library late Thursday when campus police had to use pepper spray to clear a “flash mob.”
As many as 500 people – some dressed in bizarre costumes – stormed the building’s lobby just before 10 p.m. to mark the start of final exams.
It was at least the second time in a week that college students staged such a stunt in Virginia. Video of a Sunday event at James Madison University in Harrisonburg shows hundreds swarming a library . Within minutes, students are crowd-surfing, tossing toilet paper rolls, and jumping from a balcony as people scream and cheer.
ODU’s flash mob, organized on the social networking site Facebook, appears to have been much shorter-lived. Campus police, tipped off just before the event, watched closely as students headed inside the library, said university spokeswoman Jennifer Mullen.
When the crowd reached upwards of 400, police asked the city of Norfolk for assistance.
Officers tried to disperse students with “verbal commands,” Mullen said. When that didn’t work, they began using pepper spray, although it wasn’t aimed at anyone directly.
“It’s called clearing a space,” she said.
Students had gathered at a parking garage a half-hour earlier, said Bryoney Hayes, an ODU student and an editor of the campus newspaper, The Mace & Crown.
One person was dressed as a Christmas tree, one as a banana , and another as a doughnut, Hayes said.
“It got kind of crazy trying to get through the sensors,” Hayes said. “We got in and nobody could move, it was so packed.”
Within several minutes, word spread that police were there with pepper spray, she said. The crowd broke up.
No one was arrested or injured, Mullen said, although a sensor near the doorway was damaged.
The event was the first of its kind that she had heard of at ODU, although the Facebook page shows that a similar stunt was planned at the Webb University Center in May. A description reads: “The group will rush into the end of Webb where the restaurants are. It will not last very long, maybe 10 minutes, but it will be epic.”
Megan Morrow, photo editor for The Mace & Crown, said she waited inside the library to snap pictures. As 10 p.m. neared, students exchanged furtive glances. Then people rushed in.
“People were jumping around, chanting, 'ODU,’ crowd-surfing,” she said. “It just kind of went wild.”

Suck it up Norfolk
so many people of Hampton Roads do not understand the idea of college traditions. You know why? This area never had a real university.
ODU is turning into a wonderful residential university with a record number of on-campus this year. This is simply part of the "college life" that was never brought to this area. Many of these past commenters simply aren't used to such a lifestyle.
I was part of the mob and if the police didn't mace everyone, the panic wouldn't have stampeded everyone out creating a broken sensor. The police really do overreact.
This happens at all major universities...suck it up Norfolk.
And I love how the cops lie by saying no one was sprayed directly.
There's a video on facebook that shows a direct spray within 6 inches!
I'm
curious, as to how many of the posters supporting these students, would be as supportive if these students were attending NSU, HU or VSU, & did the exact same thing at those schools?
JMU Dukes
JMU had over 3,000 students storm and take over the East Campus Library, hack into the sound system and play party music over the loud system, and had a straight up party in the library before exams started. sorry ODU we failed to "fizzle before we got spicy". another reason why JMU > ODU. go dukes
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Seven years of college down the drain. Might as well join the f'ing Peace Corps.
Run for your lives
Wow watch the video and things so "so out of control". People jumping and shouting "ODU". People throwing paper streamers. A few people crowd surfing. So dangerous. And the future leader comments? Give me a break. Considering the past of Obama (cocaine), Bush (cocaine, DUI), and Clinton (marijuana and numerous extra marital affairs and using state police to cover it up) I don't think what these kids are doing would make them any less worthy of being future leaders than what we have had for the past 20 years.
hmm...
yet students at the University of Virginia, one of the most prestigious universities in the state, can strip themselves of all their clothes and run across the main lawn?
Last time I checked, UVA students turn out pretty successful.
It's obvious
It's obvious that the people who participated are young and those that criticize it are not. Don’t they still streak at Harvard every year? Seriously, it is better to hear about these young people blowing off steam in a non violent, fun way rather than hearing about another mugging on campus. Don’t be a hater.
It's obvious
It's obvious you stereotype which is irrational. I also don't think you realize how fast an overcrowded space can turn ugly. Experienced event planners spend a lot of time making sure there isn't bottlenecks that can lead to trampling and block help to those that need it.
This wasn't a flash mob...
This wasn't a flash mob... with a flash mob you show up do a joint action/manuever/stunt whatever and disperse... this was just a pack of jaded bored DUMBASSES that didn't get enough attention from Mums and DaDa whilst growing up
Another one . . .
Just because you didn't go to college and you never participated in anything like this doesn't mean it was wrong or that they were "a pack of jaded bored DUMBASSES that didn't get enough attention from Mums and DaDa whilst growing up." According to you and others like you, freedom of expression should be stifled and everyone should be automatons that just say 'yes sir' 'no sir'. I may be nearing my 50's, but I understand and applaud what these students did.
