Military housing allowances to rise 2.5 percent

Posted to: Military Realty News

Military personnel will receive an average housing allowance increase of 2.5 percent next year, the Defense Department announced today.

For service members with dependents, the average increase in the Basic Allowance for Housing will be about $37 per month. A typical junior enlisted member with dependents will get about $25 more per month, while a senior non-commissioned officer with dependents will receive about $42 more.

In South Hampton Roads, the new monthly allowance for a service member in the E-1 pay grade with dependents will be $1,359, up from $1,316.

The allowance is adjusted annually to reflect changes in median market rent, average utility costs and average renter's insurance. A DoD Web site allows users to check rates by ZIP code and pay grade.

An estimated $19 billion in housing allowances will be paid to nearly 1 million service members in 2010.

The new rates take effect Jan. 1.

Mr. Best Does Not No Best

Hey "Mr. Best" have you ever tried to live on an E1's salary??? It is very, very difficult if not impossible, especially if you are married (I speak from experience)!!!!! Any help you get is appreciated even if it's 2.5%. Why don't you try living on an E1's salary... You would be crying for a housing allowance.

If you don't like your

If you don't like your salary why don't you get another job that enables you to live on your salary? Stop being so selfish think about civilians, some with no jobs due to the war economy, who have to live on much less with no benefits. Is this just the five sided funny farm driving up the rent for their buddies? You wouldn't make it to noon at a real job if you could find someone to hire you with your attitude. If you need more money for housing why wasn't there a COLA increase for Social Security? I am sick of the military demanding respect and the war diminishing the value of everything civilians have worked for.

I like my job

Here we go again? Just what is a real job according to you? I have only worked in the military so I don't know. I'm in Iraq right now. I manage nearly 45 personnel, more than half are Iraqis, plus civilian contractors who make 6 times more money than I do. I'm responsible for the operation of an 88 million dollar facility and the care of hundreds of detained insurgents who wouldn't hesitate to kill me at any given chance. I'm only an E6. My family survives pay check to pay check in a 1090 sq ft home, that I love but miss terribly right now and have for the past 9 months. It only took me 11 years to work for something that nice. Can you make it in my job past noon? Don't forget, to call home on Christmas, if you’re not too busy doing this job. Don't forget that E1's volunteered to be a part of something bigger than themselves. We volunteered to come here and make these sacrifices so civilians don't have too. "All gave some, some gave all".

I'm only an E6

Don't degrade yourself by suggesting an E-6 is an underling. I understand what you meant but remember, you are past midway thru the chain so be proud. Thank you for your service to the country and keep up the good work.

E-1s not unfairly paid...

What exactly are the qualifications to be an E-1? The ability to sign your own name? An IQ bordering mentally handicapped? Come on now. If we pay our burger flippers and janitors in McDonalds $7.25 an hour, there is no reason why thats not a fair wage for a burger flipper or janitor on a ship. Dont hand me that they have to go out to sea, or serve in a warzone, because they get bonus money for that as well, which I dont take issue with.

best

This is why houses in the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area will never be reasonably priced. An E-1 in the military with a family gets $1359/month just for a house on top of his/her pay. Guess what, the realtors know this and so do the landlords. So, of course they will not go below that amount for the mortgage or rent payment.

Communism at its best.

How do you figure?

How do you figure this is communism? I wish people would stop tossing about the word "Communism" for everything they dont agree with, and actually educate themselves on what communism actually is.

Thank You Government

The governments generosity is overwhelming!!! How can afford this 2.5% raise in the military's housing allowance... I'll bet if it was a raise for the senator's/congressmen it would be alot more then 2.5%, and the Dems and Republicans would be passing that vote with almost 100% voting yea....
