Monarchs seek answers after third loss in row

RICHMOND

The Old Dominion locker room door stayed closed longer than usual Wednesday night. Inside, players held an impromptu meeting.

"We mainly just had a man-to-man talk, between the team," guard Marsharee Neely said. "We told each other what we think, how we feel. We opened up to each other, as brothers."

The occasion for this early season soul-searching? The Monarchs' third straight loss, 67-60, to Richmond.

The loss dropped ODU to 4-3 in this season of high expectations. Again, the Monarchs missed a chance for a quality out-of-conference win, letting a nine-point halftime lead slip away.

After a lost weekend in the South Padre Island Invitational, the Monarchs came here hoping to put that tournament behind them. Instead, South Padre followed them, in a sense. The Spiders, who won the South Padre event by beating Mississippi State and Missouri, tied up loose ends by dispatching ODU, the tournament's other semifinalist, back in their home gym.

Richmond (7-1) did it with 60 percent shooting in the second half, and by going 22 of 24 from the foul line.

The Spiders took control of the game with a 15-2 run to open the second half, and held on as ODU got within six with about two minutes to go. As in their losses to Missouri and Mississippi State in South Padre, the Monarchs missed makeable shots and failed to get key defensive stops down the stretch.

"We've played three really good teams, neutral and road," coach Blaine Taylor said. "A lot of teams are playing home games this time of year.

"We've bitten off a lot and we knew we'd take one on the chin here and there. There's certainly no cause to think there's not a lot of basketball ahead, a lot of good things."

That was the gist of the players' post-game meeting, Neely and point guard Darius James said.

"We had a long talk," James said. "We usually wait. All the players said how they felt."

"It starts with each person figuring out their roles again, doing soul searching and realizing what's wrong and what's right," Neely said. "The most important thing is that we stick together as a team."

ODU opened an 11-point lead in the first half, frustrating Richmond with a zone defense that had forward Ben Finney at the point. James banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the Monarchs to the locker room on a high note.

It didn't take long for momentum to shift in the second.

Richmond began swinging the ball more effectively, and knocking down 3-pointers, on shots in which the Monarchs relaxed "about half a heartbeat," Taylor said.

Forward Ryan Butler (13 points) made 3 of 5, and guard David Gonzalvez (13 points) made 2 of 4.

The Monarchs' perimeter touch deserted them, and with Richmond sagging inside on center Gerald Lee ( nine points) ODU had trouble scoring.

"We missed 3-foot shots in the paint and 2-foot putbacks," Taylor said.

Neely missed all five of his 3-point attempts. Trian Iliadis went 1 for 4. ODU went 5 of 21 from behind the arc.

It all added up to another night in which ODU was again forced to point to the big picture, and stress that the season is still young.

"Everybody would like this storybook ride through the season, and there aren't many people that have that," Taylor said.

Embarrasing

Im an ODU student right now, I have been going to ODU games since 2006. I know this assembled team has the most talent ODU has had in my time here, and the experience is greater (relatively). The first 3.5 games of this season was the team we expected to see this year (I count Marshall as a half game because that was when we began to first notice a shift in tempo). Something has changed in the minds of the Monarchs, and I dont know what it is, but the team's players and team's coaches need to flip the switch back to vs. Longwood like playing, and vs. Liberty like playing... and not switch it back the other way UNTIL the season is over. Otherwise this great chance to have a wonderful season will be ruined.

Richmond

Old dominion posts about Richmond are just plain blind. It's obvious from South Padre to Richmond, Va this Spider team is a better team!! End of conversation.

You wanted the hype

Where did the fight go? The swag? I mean Blaine and the boys wanted the tougher schedule to prove we are ready for some real competition and we look like we never woke up from the plane ride to Texas. I saw everyone of you in ODU's gym working out hard on the bikes and at practice over the summer but for what? To put up that kind of effort? I understand Richmond is hot but we shouldn't lose 3 straight to anyone on this schedule!

Gerald you need to carry yourself on that court as our leader as the rest of the guys will feed off it. Physicality is what ODU basketball is founded on... The Aussie can't guard anyone and we obviously have trouble against full court pressure. Last note, Kent you have the fastest first step on our team and you need to demand the ball more and drive to the basket and stop settling for mid-range jumpers.

It's almost too late

At the beginning of the season it was looking like ODU might be good enough to make the NCAAs even if they finish 2nd in the CAA. Now, they are already at a point where they will have to win the CAA tournament to go. Even then, they're looking like a "one and done" 12th seed. What a shame.

Even William & Mary beat Richmond...badly.

Wondering

Im still wondering what has happened to this team. It is looking like a long cold rainy winter. Im beginning to long for next years football season. I thought this would be a championship team on some level.

Depth?

(cont'd) along for the ride. I've never questioned Coach Taylor's play calling since he has been at ODU. I remain a big fan, but I have to put a good bit of blame on him for last nights loss. The players who missed gimme shots know that they gave away several points. I'm glad to hear they had "an airing of grievances" behind closed doors and took responsibility. Lot of basketball to be played but right now we don't look anything like the unanimous pre-season CAA's best team as voted by the coaches. It's conference time...no more excuse time.

Depth?

Seems like we have been told over and over again during this young season that the Monarchs have tremendous depth. Can go 10 strong with little drop off, is a statement I recall. I have a question, why is it that we decided to abandon any semblance of full court pressure in the 2nd half until the 4 minute mark? When we finally employed full court pressure on the inbounds, it resulted in turnovers and finally shots started falling and scoring opportunities were created. If we are so "deep" then why not pressure the hell out of a much slower team which has two ball handlers, at best, on the floor at ALL TIMES! Keep rotating fresh players and not sit back. (Worked pretty well in the 1st half). Richmond was already in the double bonus with 12 minutes to go in the second half on questionable officiating, so whats a few more trips to the line to extend the game or have a fighting chance at some fast break points? With 1:45 left to go in the game and the Monarchs down 6 points I believe, Blaine has his team play zone, not foul and Richmond predictably drains yet another 3 pointer without as much as a late attempt to challenge the shot. They dictated the tempo and we were happy to go
