Norfolk State University President Carolyn Meyers will not be heading to Baltimore to lead Morgan State University.
The school's Board of Regents selected David Wilson, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension, to become its 12th president.
Meyers, 63, had been named one of three finalists in early November. She was at Morgan State two weeks ago completing interviews and making presentations to faculty, staff and students.
In a statement released Friday, Meyers said, "I would like to be one of the first to congratulate Dr. Wilson on his selection and I wish him much success. Dr. Wilson will join the ranks of many highly-qualified presidents leading historically black colleges and universities. I welcome him to the HBCU family."
Meyers is in her fourth year at Norfolk State and recently has come under scrutiny. The NSU Board of Visitors held a special meeting in October to discuss her performance.
After being named a finalist, Meyers issued a statement in which she said she had been approached by Morgan State's search committee and saw that as a testament to NSU's achievements.
Wilson, the son of Alabama sharecroppers, has more than 31 years of higher education experience. He is expected to begin his new job in July. Earl Richardson, who will resign at the end of the month as Morgan State's president after 25 years, will remain until June 30.
Robert Randall, president of the Norfolk State University Alumni Association Chesapeake chapter, said that he was glad Meyers did not get the post. He likes how she's reached out to alumni and appreciates the work she's done with opening the new student center.
"I feel that she's done a good job here," Randall said.

The point of this article is
The point of this article is to address Dr. Meyers failed attempt at the MSU position, but more importantly her performance at NSU so far. I’m sure she has done good things for NSU, but has anyone questioned why she would want to leave in the first place? What is going on behind closed doors? Or Is she really doing that great of a job? These questions have nothing to do with some of the very barbarous comments that have been made on this post. I’m certain that there are more intellectuals in the Hampton Roads area than what has been displayed in this discussion space.
positions in the workforce
positions in the workforce or graduate schools based on additional experience and specific needs to meet profile or skill set. If anything NSU meets a legitimate need of communities throughout the Hampton Roads area for individuals who may not be able to gain admission to UVA or W&M. In 2009 that need may revolve around a socioeconomic situation versus a race related issue. From a historical standpoint NSU and other HBCU's supply many African-Americans with an experience of comfort and inclusion that they may not be able to receive by being a minority at a large majority institution. So students will select a college based on where they can see themselves being happy and NOT because a majority schools wants to recruit them to become a black face on a white campus.
Lastly. The comments that have been made on this post by many who see a NSU education inferior to JMU, ODU, VATECH and others are quite disturbing. To be frank nobody cares about JMU, ODU, VATECH, outside of the state of Virginia. I've met people who have graduated from many VA publics who are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, so assuming inferiority based on what school you have attended is completely erroneous.
Arguments not relevant to Article
Well I must say I was surprised by many of the comments in relation to this posted article.
1st: Unless you are Harvard or Yale, Berkley or Stanford, it really doesn't matter what school you attend unless it has a major that meets a specific interest. Making comparison of admissions standards between Norfolk State and W&M completely has no relevance to an article that discusses a nationwide presidential search. And to be quite frank if the College Board is your only source of college admissions information, you may want to find other sources.
2nd: I completely understand that ODU is the region's largest majority school. However assuming that an internship experience where you worked with less than competent people and saying that they were NSU students without knowing is completely irresponsible. I understand school pride, but mixing Monarch pride with ignorance is a deadly combination.
3rd. I did not attend a HBCU or one of Hampton Road’s regional schools. I don't have a personal interest in who has the best school in VA. As a scholar of higher education I do believe that regardless if you went to ODU or NSU I'm certain that graduates from both are selected for posit
goldfinch's obsession with NSU!
This is not the first time that Goldfinch has offered harsh criticism regarding NSU.I wonder what is the origin of his vitriol towards the school. Having attended and completed an HBCU, and two HWCUs (Historically White Colleges and Universities)and having earned both graduate and post graduate degrees, I recognize that EVERY school has both strengths and areas that need improvement. Stevie Wonder can see that NSU is moving in the right direction, AND that Dr Meyers has been a positive force for that forward movement.
NSU Negative Comments
If you look at the negative comments about NSU's current poor academic reputation or lack of diversity, then you will realize why Dr. Meyers has failed NSU as a leader as well as failed to get the job in Baltimore.
Better Luck next Time Ms Meyers
It was in deed a setback for NSU that Ms Myers fell short of the qualifications that Morgan State was looking for. Hopefully she will be successful in her next job search
Every single time...
..there is a story about NSU or anything else that remotely involves race relations I'm always amazed at the extreme amount of ignorance that is spewed on this site. It's pathetic. Who's side am I on? What difference does it make. No matter who says what it will not change anyones mind. Ignorance is ignorance, and it is on full display here DAILY. Cheers.
Carolyn Meyers
Well, you thought it was time to move on....and we agree with you. Good-bye!
Change your headline
Using the term "falls short" implies shortcomings/ lack of qualifications. I am sure that is not the case - she just did not make the final cut - 2 of 3 were destined to be rejected. Give her some credit at a time when she is surely disappointed she did not make it.
that's not what it means
Dr. Meyers set a goal and failed to achieve it. That is precisely what "falls short" means. Quit looking for insult when there is none.
