A 17-year-old and 53-year-old died in a two-car crash Saturday morning on Jefferson Avenue during heavy fog.

About 7:15 a.m. Newport News police were called to Jefferson Avenue north of Fort Eustis and found two vehicles with extensive front-end damage, a news release from Newport news police said. The two drivers, Jarin Sims, 17, of Newport News, and George Joseph Woolley, 53, of Williamsburg were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in the two vehicles.

Police said Sims was traveling north on Jefferson Avenue when his Mitsubishi went off the road. He overcorrected, sending the vehicle into the southbound lanes and then colliding head-on with Woolley's Ford Taurus.

Investigators said weather was a factor and that Sims was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Police shut down Jefferson Avenue in both directions between Yorktown Road and Fort Eustis until about 10:10 a.m.
