Unemployment rose in seven of 10 northeastern North Carolina counties in October, according to state Employment Security Commission data released Tuesday.

The number of workers without jobs increased in these counties: Bertie, from 10.5 to 10.6 percent; Camden, 7.1 to 7.4 percent; Currituck, 5 to 6 percent; Dare, 6.8 to 8.6 percent; Pasquotank, 9.1 to 9.3 percent; Perquimans, 10.2 to 10.3 percent; and Hyde, 5.9 to 6.1 percent.

While rate in Chowan County and Edenton fell to 11.7 percent for the same period, it remained the only northeastern county with a rate higher than the state's 10.7 percent average.

Unemployment rates also dipped in Gates County, from 7.1 to 6.7 percent, and Hertford County, from 9.4 to 9.2 percent.

The rates are not seasonally adjusted, said Larry Parker, a spokesman for the Employment Security Commission.

comparing apples and Zeechini?

RLM, according to the article your unemployment rate in bertie is 10.7. How does that compare with your upper adminstrative salary totals that include your assistant county manager and economic develepor with no assist. or economic developer in chowan?

not quite sure

what your point is? what deputy county manager?
my point is that chowan county commissioners nor the town of edenton are doing anything to promote economic development, even when times are good. when Lowe's wanted to come to town, who opposed it? Mayor Vaughan, Councilman Dixon and Biggs. then the county commissioners voted for no incentives.
anytime there has been a chance of something coming that could bring a job, it is opposed by many in the leadership of these councils. Also, with the cuts to services now in the county, what business would come if the economy was good.
it is reported the county manager and the chairman are responsible for economic development since the EDC went bad. What are they doing to get jobs for the 11% unemployed........which is more like 17%. just questioning things Curtis, sorry it bothers you so

Why Should They Promote Economic Development?

RLM? Why Should They Promote Economic Development? Because the people you mentioned a influential people. They have inflential friends as well. People listen to them and are influenced. You think Byrum's Hardware wanted Lowe's? What happened to Acoustic Coffee? Oh..right, they left, had a change of heart..after how long?? You think the new "upscale" "proper Edentonion" eateries wanted Chowan county/Edenton looking like Elizabeth City/Cheasapeake/Virginia Beach? They are scared of losing power and influence. It is masked by the illusion of being "public servants". In reality, the stage has been set for the few to cash in on an unsuspecting county/town! I wonder who has the most titles or interest in land lately! Any new housing developments lately?
Sun Tzu made a statement 1000's of years ago-when your forces become large, it is not easy to mask your movements!

chowan

Chowan will sadly stay high. With the sagging economy and sagging housing market, the county is doing nothing to promote business and industry. The county is cutting everything but the rising County Manager's salary, and economic development is one. Even if the economy turns around, Chowan will not compete. We are becoming a retiree community with people that don't create jobs. Families are being driven out!
It is time the county learn to play ball with the big boys. These new commissioners say they want to "save" the county! Well start with jobs! You pay your Manager a salary that is well beyond the norm for county managers, especially managers that have no experience or credentials. Yet you let middle class people suffer, lose jobs, and lose tax revenue! Including your own staff! Stand up and do something that will at least promote jobs when the economy turns around. You drove Lowe's out already Mr. Goodwin and Mr. Vaughan, don't do this anymore!

Franklin Plant closing

The unemployement numbers in Gates and Hertford counties will go up once the IP paper mill in Franklin closes. There are many who worked at that mill and lived in those counties. Losing 50 jobs in a small county like Gates can increase the unemployment rate by .5%

continuation of comment

Looks like I got too long-worded for the comment box. Here's the rest and I trust it's a help. . .

The second is more for folks who are looking for data-entry or related work. They've been in business 7 years and have very recently opened themselves up to the public in a bigger way.

I trust this will help a number of folks out there, and encourage you to keep your head up and your mind resourceful. You WILL get through this.

An answer for some is online

The news on this topic in so many states is not good, and those percentages represent a lot of hurting families. The trouble is, we don't read much about solutions unless it has something to do with how to be better at job-hunting when there aren't enough jobs to go around.

Maybe this is for only 10 or 20%, but that's plenty. Let me ask you a question. During off-time, (which for some is all day), when you are on your computer, do you use it for entertainment? Most do, and yet with over a billion people now online world-wide and growing. If you knew how, you could start a business and/or promote a product to- if you had the skills.

Skills can be learned. My suggestion (as one who has worked full time from home since 1996) is to stay away from the "get rich" websites that tell people all they have to do is join and they'll make money. Instead, find a proven, reputable source that will be the means to learn the online skills you want.

I'll leave 2 here for you. The first was recently voted #1 by probably the most trusted review website on the Internet (IM Report Card- Look them up if you wish) The second is more for folks who are looking for data-entry or related work. The

Never fear

Obama is going to fix this! Ha ha ha.
