Verizon to close 450-employee Virginia Beach call center

Posted to: Business Jobs Virginia Beach

Verizon Wireless will close its Virginia Beach call center, which has about 450 employees, in nine to 12 months, the company announced Thursday.

All workers who do not have "performance issues" will be eligible to transfer to other Verizon Wireless locations, company spokeswoman Melanie Ortel said.

The center, which handles customer-service calls, had been run by Alltel, which was acquired by Verizon in January for $28.1 billion. Verizon is closing the center, and three others across the country, "to consolidate resources to maximize efficiency," Ortel said.

Workers will get at least one month's severance pay, Ortel said. Those who choose to relocate will receive an incentive of no less than $10,000 after taxes.

Call centers!

I have been getting weekly sales flyers thrown in my yard for what seems like forever from the Daily Press. I kicked them out into the street. Then one day I decided to pick one up and it had a number to call to stop delivery. It was a call center in the Phillipines. The Daily Press office is about 5 miles from me in Newport News, I pass it on the way to and from work. Phillipinos aren't throwing the flyers in my front yard, why should I be calling them? I have gone back to kicking them out in the street. I get billed for storm water drain cleaning anyway, so I am actually doing my part to keep jobs here. Go me!

To quote: "...All workers who do not have "performance issues"

will be eligible to transfer to other Verizon Wireless locations".

What was not said, however, was that those employees who speak Hindi and/or Filipino will get top priority.

Someone was bloviating about how "the strong companies survive, and the weak companies sell out or go out of business". I think he should have said: "except for mega-banks, investment companies, insurance companies too large to fail, domestic car companies and other industry segments feeding off the teats of Washington".

Not a language

Filipino is not a language.

Sure it is.

From Wikipedia:

"Filipino is the national language of the Philippines and, along with English, is an official language."

From PhraseBase:

"On November 13, 1937, the First National Assembly created the National Language Institute, which selected Tagalog for the basis of a new national language. In 1961, this language became known as Pilipino, which was later renamed to Filipino."

Wikipedia is not a reliable source

Wikipedia entries are not a reliable source. Try to write a college paper citing Wikipedia and you will get a "F" for it.

Sure it is.

I think Wiki's an excellent source, as long as you use it with an open mind, and not as your sole reference. I think it's rich in details, and provides a wealth of information, used in conjunction with its required references.

I realize that "nothing's perfect", but that doesn't warrant outright dismissiveness of its value.

But....just to make you happy, you'll also see my statement regarding the Filipino language referenced in the Merriam Webster dictionary.

I hope you consider that a reliable source....yes?

I work for Cox and I am very

I work for Cox and I am very proud of it. When you call 222-1111 you get a person who lives and works right here in Hampton Roads. Just a little fact to consider when Verizon knocks at your door.

yeah, they live right here,

yeah, they live right here, but they dont know what they are talking about. EVER. ITs really sad when you know more about computers and internet usage etc then the employees that work for the company. If there is an outage in your area, it takes them a good 30 minutes to admit it and tell you how long the outage will be. I have had nothing but trouble with Cox and their service and am in the process of switching to Verizon. Ive had both services before, and Fios never has an outage so I am looking forward to never having to call anyone to report an outage, or school some customer service agent on how their product should work.

No, when you call 222-1111

No, when you call 222-1111 you have to spend a 1/2 hour negotiating the automated voicebot and then once I finally get thru the department I want is either closed or the customer service rep is RUDE and not helpful. Plus your commercials are very annoying!!

more jobs for india

Guess we'll have to deal more and more with those annpoying Indian accents you can hardly understand.
I have verizon cable/internet and have never spoke with a rep on the phone that was actually in Virginia. Last one i spoke with over problems was located in Charleston WV.
