RICHMOND

Virginia Tech linebacker Cody Grimm has won the Dudley Award as the top Division I football player in Virginia, edging Richmond quarterback Eric Ward.

Grimm, a former walk-on who this year was selected to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team, received the award Tuesday night. He received three first-place votes, one fewer than Ward, but got 35 total points in the balloting by state sports writers and broadcasters.

Ward got 29 points, followed by defensive ends Arthur Moats of James Madison, who also starred at Churchland High, with 19 points and Adrian Tracey of William & Mary with 16.

The small college award, named for Richmond native Willie Lanier, went to running back Caleb Jennings of Emory & Henry, who rushed for an average of 137 yards this season.

He was third nationally with 1,919 all-purpose yards and also scored 14 touchdowns.

Cody Grimm, defensive back coach

Make it or not in the NFL, Grimm has a unique ability which Virginia Tech needs; the judgement that has put him into effective action against opposing football offenses needs to be taught(as much as is possible) to college underclassmen, the future VT defense backs. Great year Cody, much success in coming years!
