Wet fields keeping some Va. growers at bay

Recent rains are keeping cotton and soybean growers out of their fields in Virginia.

David Coleman of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation said the wet fields have delayed harvests and some farmers may have to abandon crops in soggy fields.

Greenville County grower Joey Doyle said about 75 percent of his soybeans are still standing in their fields. He's hopeful for a break in the weather so he can harvest.

Wet fields are also delaying the planting of winter wheat. Doyle said he's only been able to plant less than half of his 300-acre winter wheat crop, and the planting window is now shut.
