The debate season is starting early for the six Republicans seeking their party's nomination to run against U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, a Democrat, in the November election.
Nye represents Virginia's 2nd District, which stretches from Virginia Beach through Norfolk and up to the Eastern Shore.
The GOP contenders have agreed to meet for their first debate Jan. 21 on the Eastern Shore.
The candidates include Kenny Golden, former chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party; Ben Loyola, owner of an engineering firm; Ed Maulbeck, a defense contractor; Bert Mizusawa, a government and corporate consultant; Scott Rigell, owner of Freedom Automotive; and Scott Taylor, a real estate broker and security consultant.
The debate is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. in Little Italy restaurant in Nassawadox. For more information, contact the Eastern Shore GOP Club at www.esvagop.com or (757) 678-7200.
No decision has been made on whether the Republicans will choose their nominee by a spring convention, a one-day caucus or in a June 8 primary, Gary Byler, chairman of the 2nd District Republican Committee, said Tuesday.
Nye, of Norfolk, was elected in November 2008, defeating incumbent Thelma Drake.

Nye just needs to change the letter.
From D to R.
Why waste time on an election when you will get the same result just another last name to place after Congressman.
None of these jokers are representing the vast majority of America. Those who make under 50,000 dollars year. They preach there sermons, they ask for your vote. And then they represent the corporate oligarchy that is really running the nation.
Quit wasting time reading the news and get back to work peasants!
Scott Rigell for 2nd District
I'm so excited Scott Rigell has stepped up to run for Congress. We desperately need succesful business owners who can get us back on track financially. Rigell has also given back to our community faithfully for over 20 years. He is the right man for the job and he can beat Glenn Nye. He's got my full support!
Scott Rigell
Scott Rigell is the Scott I was referring to.
