With eye on U.S. Rep. Nye, GOP hopefuls debate

The first public debate Thursday night of the six Republicans seeking the GOP nomination to run for Congress against Glenn Nye was less about their differences than their shared views that the federal government has to shrink and the U.S. has to become energy independent.

Their messages varied, but all carried the same theme - less government interference.

"Put a hiring freeze on government jobs. That's the first clear signal that government can send," said Ben Loyola, owner of an engineering firm in Virginia Beach.

"The spending frenzy has got to stop," said Ed Maulbeck, a defense contractor.

"I will do anything I can to stop the bleeding," said Bert Mizusawa, a government and corporate consultant. "To reduce the deficit, we need leaders with backbone who can put money back in your pocket."

"The best way for the government to help our small business is to simply leave us alone," said Scott Rigell, owner of Freedom Automotive. "We know it's not the government that creates jobs. It's our small businesses."

Government has to let capitalism run its course, they said.

"Let big companies that are failing fail," said Scott Taylor, a real estate broker and security consultant. "Let companies that are innovative thrive."

During the two-hour forum before an audience of about 100 in an Italian restaurant, the 2nd District candidates answered questions given to them in advance. They were critical of the health care reform legislation and championed the idea that the next congressman needs to be a military veteran - as they all are.

While referring to Nye, a Democrat, as "our freshman congressman" a few times, his name was only mentioned once.

The six said drilling for gas and oil off Virginia's coast and building more nuclear power plants were critical to reviving the economy and would be a boost to Virginia.

"There's no excuse for us not to drill," said Kenny Golden, former chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party. "There's no excuse for us not to use nuclear energy, and we need to do it now."

The concerns that offshore drilling platforms would hurt the environment or might affect the Navy's ability to maneuver can be addressed without blocking the drilling, they said.

"It's good training for the Navy. There are a lot of oil rigs in the Middle East," said Mizusawa. "It's a strategic imperative for America to develop these alternatives."

"We're not going to spill oil, and if we did spill oil we have the ability to clean it up," Maulbeck said.

Several candidates said they opposed the health care bills being debated in Congress.

The candidates are expected to appear as several other forums in the coming weeks before party members in the 2nd District, which stretches from part of Norfolk through Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore, choose their nominee.

Party members are expected to meet next week to decide whether to choose their candidate at a convention, a one-day caucus or a June 8 primary election.

Even funnier!

girlyamber's comment that Scott Taylor "killed it." If by "killed it" you meant suffered so terribly it sounded like he was dying. I'd bet girlyamber didn't even listen to the debate or works for Taylor's staff.

Rude

Though a bit rude of you. I do agree Taylor did not perform well but was certainly not the worst. I am undecided but Rigell was clearly the top performer from the audio feed. A close second would be Loyola and Golden.

Very Funny

"The spending frenzy has got to stop," said Ed Maulbeck, a defense contractor. Except, of course, in his sector. How many unnecessary civilian jobs (contractors) do we have on the bases? Does cutting include everything?

Self-Serving Politics

These Republican hopefuls are just giving hypocritical lip service as usual. To suggest that we need to trim government spending and freeze government hiring while at the same time stating that a military veteran should represent the 2nd says it all. The DOD is part of the government and therefore part of the problem. But in the 2nd too many people benefit from big goverment spending, and it seems most of these candidates are no exception. Like with Health Care.... I'm against government Health Care.... but don't touch my TRICARE or MEDICARE... it's the haves doing anything to stick it to the have-nots.

simple minds and promises

I don't see increased off-shore drilling resulting in fewer government jobs; just the opposite, I expect. Yes we can and should reduce the size and scope of the bureacracy, but black-and-white slogans such as "implement a hiring freeze" appeal only to the simple-minded. Do they really believe we wouldn't need more inspectors and regulators with increased off-shore drilling? Do they really believe that the government currently has just the right number of auditors, inspectors, and investigators?

BTW, hiring freezes are a joke. When you can't hire enough employees, you award a contract to pick up the slack. Contractors cost us more than employees. But we'll call it success anyway because we didn't hire any new employees. Genius.

I say hire more government employees when and where we need them. But hire the right ones.

SCOTT TAYLOR crushed it!!

Great job Scott Taylor!! He was head and shoulders above everyone else. Rigell sounded like dirty used car salesman. Go Taylor Go!!

Taylor camp worker

I was trying to send you a link so you could actually listen to the debate and realized you are all over the place with your pro-Taylor/anti-everyone else remarks. I would like to stand by my working for Taylor's campaign remarks made previously.

Finally

Americans fighting to stop the Governement bullying. I had almost lost hope. TEA Parties were one thing - but the governemnt reps just kept on doing there thing - they just didn't get it. We now have a chance to correct all this with regular people, not professional politicians, getting involved. This is what the framers of our country had wanted. Good luck to all of them.

Our only chance to beat Glenn Nye

Scott Rigell did a phenomenal job las night! He was clear on his convictions and plans for our district. He has the right combination of experience and is highly qualified for to represent us in Washington. He knows that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and will fight to keep taxes and regulations low. He is the embodies what it means to be a leader. If he's the Republican nominee, he will beat Glenn Nye.
