Gloucester delegate's marijuana bills voted down

RICHMOND

Testimony from a former police officer, a professor, and patients with HIV and an artificial hip wasn't enough to sway lawmakers on a H ouse subcommittee Wednesday evening. Both of Del. Harvey Morgan's bills to loosen restrictions on medical marijuana and reduce marijuana-related penalities were voted down.

The Gloucester Republican' s first proposal, to decriminalize possession of small amounts of the drug and reduce penalties for distributing certain quantities, was voted down by committee members who disputed that it would save the state money and said it eased the punishments dealt out to drug dealers.

But his second bill, which would allow doctors to use marijuana to treat more diseases, found more traction, including from the subcommittee's chair, House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith, who said he helped Morgan draft the bill.

"I truly believe if we can use morphine and opiates and narcotics, we ought to be able to use marijuana," he said.

The bill was voted down, but delegates said they would be open to a proposal that named specific diseases that marijuana could be prescribed to treat.

legalize for everyone and

legalize for everyone and tax the heck out it to fix the roads, increase education budget...........etc.......

I Love You!!

legalize for everyone and tax the heck out it to fix the roads, increase education budget...........etc.......

I've been saying that for years now!!

bye-bye money

It makes no sence to let the drug cartels take our money. What would happen if all that pot money stayed in the USA? Ask the delagates is that a good thing or a bad thing, they know all the answers..We're not talking about a few bucks here and there,we're talking billions every year for decades.Wheres the logic in that???

The Logic..?

Logic will give way to politicians that figure out how "They" can make money legalizing MJ!

Think about 3 billion dollars just showing up in your bank account one day!

I agree with you-though I hope the billions earned from legalization would really help us-and not the politicians. Where the hell is the lottery money go to? High salaries?

Who are they

Please publish the names of those who voted for and against so we can remember this next time they are up for election.

Also:

"delegates said they would be open to a proposal that named specific diseases that marijuana could be prescribed to treat."

How about PMS?

That would be all of them

Not one single delegate on the panel gave a 'Nay' to tabling the proposed bill. ALL were in favor of tabling it, which (in the political world it seems) is their passive aggressive way of saying 'Nope' but not really committing to it. "Hey its 'tabled' not declined right?!"

You can see a small portion of the proceedings on the norml website (just look around for it a bit)
And continue to hold your breath VA.

This story is not quite true...

Read the proceedings of the bill(s) 1134 and 1136 again people!

THESE BILLS WERE *NOT* COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN!

They were instead "Tabled" by voice vote - "Tabling a bill" means that the vote on it is simply adjourned until a later time. It comes from the concept that the bill is put back on the table to await future action instead of being voted on and moved to the next appropriate step in the legislative process."

We didnt get a "Yes" here, but we didnt get a definite "No" either.
They are basically stalling (Id like to believe - gathering more data) as politicians commonly do.

also...

some politicians may have been caught off guard by this proposal and need a better understanding of where their constituents stand. At least that is what I hope...they are more likely talking to their major contributors as opposed to Joe and Jane Main Street.

IDIOTS!!

Ok..they said no!
Now where exactly are you politicians going to get money to fix the infrastructure?

Where are you going to get an additional 3 BILLION dollars?
Increase taxes?
I don't think so!

Sad that nanny

government can't trust the people to make their own decisions. What with drugs, food, healthcare, abortion, sex (as an adult) the right and the left always seem to think they know what's best. Rep Or Dem, the same except in how to implememnt their control. Stay out of my bank account, my bedroom, my doctor's office and my job. But no, religious zealots impose their strictures (anti gay marriage initiatives, anti abortion) and the socialists impose their's (public health, unfair taxes) impose their. Both are detrimental to a free society and an insult to free adults.
