A 20-year-old man has been arrested in the fatal crash on Interstate 295 in Hanover County last week that claimed the life of a Norfolk man and injured his 8-year-old daughter.
Nicholas R. Sickal of Barhamsville turned himself in to police after being released from Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital on Wednesday morning, a news release said. State Police said the charges include driving under the influence and manslaughter.
Sickal was released on a $5,000 bond pending his arraignment Jan. 14.
Police said that on Dec. 30, about
11:40 p.m., a 1999 Dodge Ram driven by Sickal was traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-295 when it struck a 1992 Cadillac Deville head-on.
The Cadillac's driver, William E. Goode Jr., 51, of Norfolk, died at the scene. His daughter was seriously injured but is recovering, police said.

Prayer
MY prayers go to both families and hopefully a healing process begin and lessons are learned.
also, my prayers do go out
also, my prayers do go out to the little girl who no longer has her daddy.. but i myself have lost someone because of a dumb drunk driver, & over the years i've learned it does NOTHING for me, nor my family to continuously blame the driver. it doesn't help us get over the loss, make us feel better, it does nothing but cause us more stress.. everybody makes mistakes, & although his mistake was at the cost of someone elses life.... if it was your husband or wife who was out there, and WAS of legal age to drink, you woldn't be on here rantin and raving about how stupid he or she was..and they should go to jail the rest of there lives. you'd stand by your loved ones side, & support them whether they did right or wrong... so because a 19 year old was stupid and made a mistake, and was drunk which made it illegal...it doesn't give you the right to criticize what he has done, because if you were in his families shoes & it was a loved one of yours..you WOULDN'T be saying half of the stuff. it's 2010, kids drink underage..yes law inforcement should crack down on the dui's, underage, & the selling of underage...so does that also mean we should hate every cop who doesn't catch the kids? sinc
i personally went to school
i personally went to school with nicholas sickal, and graduated in his class with him. i've grown up with him since kidnergarten, & i by no means think what he did was okay, and he shouldn't be punished for it. i'm VERY against drunk driving, & have lost somebody myself from a drunk driver. but i would like to say, ONE his court records for what he did durin high school, or any charges before this have NOTHING to do with it..they were dismissed for a reason. TWO, his facebook got erased so he wouldn't have to deal with people like ya'll harrassing him. & THREE, his profile picture tells it all? he's a 19 year old who went ot college..there was a poster on the wall that said BUDLIGHT, so that makes him an alcoholic? does that mean if you wear a revealing shirt it makes you trashy? he does have to live with this everyday of his life..whether he gets charged or not isn't up to you, or anybody else..it's up to a judge. so your opinions & what you all have to say is really irrelivant.
Poor Judgement
I am wondering, with the way our legal system is run, will the drug possessions be inadmissible in court because they have nothing to do with alcohol and therefore are declared not related to this case? I lost my father to cancer when I was in my early twenties and I still hurt so I can only attempt to imagine what this poor child is and will be going through. My thoughts and prayers go out to her and I pray she has a very strong support system.
Any charges that he has been
Any charges that he has been convicted of will be admissable in court when it comes to sentencing. During the trial, those charges have little to do with the current charges. However, when he gets convicted commonwealth attorney can argue that the defendant has had a prior record therefore does not deserve leniency
"driving under the influence"
I notice the article doesn't mention alcohol at all - was this kid under the influence of some other substance?
there is an article in the
there is an article in the richmond times that mentions it
Why they let him go
Look up his family
I'm not kidding...
In the case of an over-the-limit BAL, an officer on-scene should be authorized to:
...in cases of erratic driving, speeding, hit-and-run, etc. with minor injury and no fatalities -- bullet in driver's leg or arm, call EMS for medical attention, permanently revoke operator's license.
...in cases of major accident with multiple serious injuries or fatalities -- shot dead on site, thrown in ditch, discretion to call coroner (only as courtesy to family).
I'm POSITIVE we'd see a sharp drop-off in DUI with little or no repeat offenses, particularly in scenario number two.
I had a friend from high school who, over the course of a decade, was responsible for the deaths of seven (SEVEN!!!) people as the result of multiple DUI incidents. He kept drinking, driving and killing because the legal system kept allowing him to do it. His reckless rampage only ended when he finally killed himself in his final DUI accident.
underage drinking
i surely hope that the state looks into who sold this guy alcohol or who purchased the alcohol for him and charge him with the death of an innocent man and ruining the life of an 8yr old girl. that person is just as guilty. maybe if the state but tougher laws on drinking and purchasing alcohol like they do cigarettes this never would have happened. but then again they are to busy having drinks while coming up with stupid laws.
