McDonnell induction also induces costs to taxpayers

RICHMOND

Inaugural tuxedoes for numerous state officials: $4,000.

Corsages and boutonnieres for them: $200.

Souvenir engraved Bibles and ink pens for the swearing-in ceremony: $765.

People who pick up the tab: taxpayers.

Those expenses are part of the estimated $240,000 Virginia will spend to put on today's inaugural ceremony in the state Capitol, where Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli will be sworn in.

And they're not unique to this year.

Every four years, the cost of inauguration is borne by the state, and by extension, its residents.

"I've been involved in every one since Gov. (George) Allen directly, as clerk, and they've all been handled the same way," said House of Delegates Clerk Bruce Jamerson.

Commonplace though it may be, Michael Cassidy was surprised to learn that public money is used to pay for formal wear.

"Given the hard times, members of the General Assembly might find their way clear to renting their own tuxedos this time around," said Cassidy, executive director of the Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis, which supports financial policies favorable to low- and middle-income Virginians.

Over the years, inaugural expenses have risen alongside the prices of goods and services.

In 1998, the state spent about $160,000 on the inauguration when former Gov. Jim Gilmore was sworn in.

And the price tag four years ago was more costly than it is in 2010. About $325,000 was spent when Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was inaugurated in 2006 because the ceremony was held in Williamsburg while the State Capitol was being renovated, Jamerson said.

In addition to those being sworn in, money also is available to rent formal wear for legislators who are on the 2010 inaugural committee, which counts 25 House of Delegates members and 16 state senators.

Locals on that list are Dels. Bob Tata, R-Virginia Beach; Lionell Spruill Sr., D-Chesapeake; Johnny Joannou, D-Portsmouth; and Kenny Alexander, D-Norfolk. The Hampton Roads senators are Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth; Frederick Quayle, R-Suffolk; and Tommy Norment, R-James City.

Aside from tuxes, flowers and the like, inaugural funds are spent to build the infrastructure for the event, such as the podium for the dignitaries and the bleachers to hold thousands of guests.

A crowd of 6,000 to 8,000 people is expected to attend the inauguration today.

Other inauguration-related expenses, such as the costs of celebratory galas, are covered by private donations, not taxpayers.

McDonnell recently said he planned to raise $1.5 million to cover them, a sum that is less than what Kaine or former Gov. Mark Warner raised for their inaugural events. He's spent much of the week leading up to the inauguration participating in community service activities, saying he is mindful of the tough times facing Virginians.

Why a ceremony

There is no need for a ceremony. A justice of the peace has a bible, borrow that. Tuxedo rentals even for local politicians...out of the question. Why spend all that money, when the guy has to earn his job again in 4 years? It's just a figure head job, he can't make any changes. The political machine is rolling, crooks in there are digging their fingers in the cookie jar...ala Hamilton, and they will continue to.

Sooo, governor, you should have started out on the right path, forgoe the pompous ceremony and show us that you are cut out for the job. Stop the uusual political stuff, don't waste our money on lavish parties, and make a good name for yourself.

You should be ashamed of yourself and you did not even start yet.

Only $235.000? Who does the

Only $235.000? Who does the Pilot think should pay for it? Perhaps the Pilot thinks businesses should donate items? I hope McDonnel can raise funds to cover the expenses. Kind of odd that the Pilot brings this to our attention when it is a Repub. Governor being sworn in. In the future let's just have one of those little ceremonies like they do in Las Vegas.

Induction Ceremony

Folks, don't fight. I am sure that both Governors Kaine and Mcdonnell are not fighting. They are both probably laughing it up. We fight among ourselves about republican this, democrat that. At the end of the day us taxpayers are getting screwed. So let us Virginians keep an open mind and eye on both parties to make sure that Virginians come first, o.k.

ENOUGH with ALL wastfull Spending!!

BUT WHY didn't we hear about the $$325,000 - KAINE spent four years ago?? This article is just a slap.

I'm SICk of every CITY/State ceremony taking place on OUR DIME -
Yes, 15-20 grand for a Gov. Ceremony - I can see that ... - 240k
No. Less Ceremony - MORE WORK!

And The Prez has commited 100 Mil to helping Haiti ... Well - Government spending wise ... That wont be much ... I could rebuild that entire island with 100 Mil. Better than what they had... And I could get it fast. Quick call to Home Depot - and some negotiations... ( I'll buy from you or Lowes ...Who's gonna give me the better deal?) Do that with SEVERAL locations - NOT the home office... You get a STORE manager to cut the deal..

They should use ship containers to load the supplies. - Then they could use the containers for temp housing. There are litteraly THOUSANDS of unused containers on the East Coast. ( I did say TEMP housing - because they are in "tents" now right... you did catch that? ) But you can give these people a way to "protect" what they have left from MORE looting.

But our "bright people" can't think that far ahead ...

Thats 8 state employees jobs lost at $30000 a year

We need to get our act together.
We could have saved 8 jobs without this ceremony.

Elite wisdom: "Its not our money!"

Another sad commentary on how the government actually believe they- "work-for-us", and that being paid handsomely, is "sacrificial government service". We're just months away from the God-ordained to take us back to the good ol' days, right?
I certainly hope you enjoyed your inauguration Gov, by the way, were you aware there is a recession going on? Kind of gives a shady "Let them eat cake" starting approach to your reign, doesn't it?

All this complaining about

All this complaining about how much was spent. Who cares. I do bet that our new governor brings in more money to this state than old Kaine did.

Finally....

As you can see by the time of this post, the Commonwealth of Virginia is finally on the road to recovery from the flawed plans of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. Not only does today mark the start for a new and great history for Virginia but it is also the first step in the recovery of this great Nation that we live in. Just remember - 1/20/2013 - The Real Day of Change in America!!!! God Bless Bob McDonnel, God Bless the Commonwealth of Virginia and God Bless America.

i agree

With Little Bobby McD as governor we are going to need all God's blessings we can get.
