NORFOLK

Admirals head coach Darren Rumble was fired Saturday night, Tampa Bay Lightning executive vice president and general manager Brian Lawton announced.

Tampa Bay is the NHL’s parent club of the Admirals. Norfolk associate coach Jim Johnson will replace Rumble, Lawton said.

Admirals assistant Leigh Mendelson will remain with the team.

“We hope this move can galvanize our team and give us the impetus we need to make a push for the playoffs when we get started again after the All-Star break,” Lawton said in a statement after Norfolk’s 3-1 loss to Adirondack at Scope.

Rumble, who took over before the 2008-09 season, led the Admirals to a 50-61-6-5 record in 122 games.

Johnson played 829 games as an NHL defenseman with 29 goals and 166 assists.

Johnson served as Tampa Bay’s development coach last season and spent time in Norfolk to evaluate and develop the Lightning’s prospects.

Note Phantoms goalie John Grahame stopped 28 shots Saturday night. Ryan Craig scored the Admirals’ goal.

Just like the Skins,

If you could fire snyder you might have a chance of a winning team, well the same holds true for the Admirals FireKen young and you might have a chance of a winning team!

Norfolk Cellar Dwellers

Not sure removing Rumble will make a difference, but it will relieve some stress in his life. Watching the Admirals defense of Mahalik, not so Quick, No Action Jackson, Wishart and few of the others would drive anyone to drink.

This is a group that was lousy in Springfield and is lousy here....beside for Craig, Hall and a few others this team has little desire to play hard for 60 minutes, seems to be content to be in the cellar.......no stress and no expectations................

I really would like to see the ECHL come back, it was better hockey for the price paid to watch it. The players seemed hungry and were willing to deliver a blow ( legal or otherwise ) to take a puck and score a goal.

Dont blame Ken Young, he stepped up to keep the team here and after having a couple conversations with him he is concerned about the quality of the team. He is possibly looking to change affiliations after this year.

Oh how I long for the days of Brophy, Taylor, Bernard, Maltais, and the rest of the ECHL Admirals..........but cant live in past/have to make due with what we have which now isnt much.

yea but,

Young goes after the cheapest teams out there soo if tampa offers another few years at a better price he will take it not to mention NHL clubs will not like the losing record and poor attendance numbers we have been posting!

A Joke

Rumble will be better off in the long term. The Lightning organization is a joke, the Admirals are a joke, Ken Young is a joke who has ruined baseball and hockey in Hampton Roads. He is only in it for the concession business. Until these clowns are out of Hampton Roads hockey the team will not improve and attendance will continue to drop.

hockey

Bring on Brophy, he could coach a bad player and make him good. He would have a field day with this team.

haha ...

WHile this is very true Brophy brought out the very best in some of the least talented players at the most oppourtune time, Having a coach like brophy in todays game of long drawn out contracts he would not be able to push these "AHL" players as hard as he pushed OUR ADMIRALS Of the Early 90's I dont think Hampton roads will ever see another run of championships much less playoff contention battles anymore!

Pink at the rink.

Pink slip for the coach, too.

This is not a big deal.

This is not a big deal.

The exit of D. Rumble will

The exit of D. Rumble will bring little or no change. Being a previous
season ticket holder its simple, most of the AHL players could care less
about the "team first" concept they just want to get to the NHL. No reward
for team stats just their individual accomplishments. Frankly, watching
our old ECHL Teams was a lot more fun, THEY WANTED TO BE HERE and
we had winners. Sad but true.

Brophy.......

Bring him back, hacksaw and all!
