White House officials and Virginia's governor-elect Thursday challenged religious broadcaster Pat Robertson for comments that Haiti has been "cursed."
On "The 700 Club," broadcast from Virginia Beach, Robertson offered an explanation Wednesday for the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti: a purported pact with the devil.
In an interview Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America," senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said Robertson's remarks left her speechless and don't express the spirit of the American people or the president.
A spokesman for Bob McDonnell, who will be sworn in as governor Saturday, said: "The governor-elect disagrees with the comments that were made.... His church, St. Michael's in Glen Allen, has a sister church, St. Jean-Baptiste parish in Dos-Palais, Haiti, and parishioners regularly minister there. The governor-elect encourages all Virginians to donate to the Red Cross and the other relief organizations coordinating the humanitarian response."
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs later said of Robertson: "It never ceases to amaze me that in times of amazing human suffering, somebody says something that can be so utterly stupid."
Pilot writer Patrick Wilson and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

As I think
There is no excuse for him saying that the earthquake in Haiti was caused by a pact with the devil when they were trying to liberate themselves from the French. He furthermore stated they were being oppressed by Napoleon the Third – the joke being that he wasn't born yet when Haiti gained independence. It's simply the ramblings of an old senile man who should've stepped out of the limelight of the 700 Club years ago.

Perhaps you are living under
Perhaps you are living under rocks if you haven't heard about Pat Robertsons remarks about Haitians. There is no excuse for him saying that the earthquake in Haiti was caused by a pact with the devil when they were trying to liberate themselves from the French. He furthermore stated they were being oppressed by Napoleon the Third – the joke being that he wasn't born yet when Haiti gained independence. This kind of lunacy should result in him getting so busted and broke he needs to get payday loans to broadcast another of his "sermons" of hate, but it probably won't work out that way.
Go Pat Robinson
I love Pat because he will not be swayed by what others think, he tells it like it is. Go Pat!!!!
Not really
No, Pat does not "tell it like it is." Pat tells it like he thinks it is. But, you are correct in saying nothing can sway him... not even facts.
Pat Robertson.....
working hard to give Christians a bad name is now accepting donations; donations to which a certain percentage will likely line HIS pockets...
overblown
It's simply the ramblings of an old senile man who should've stepped out of the limelight of the 700 Club years ago. Bottom line, who cares what Pat Robertson or any other overly rich religious hypocrite thinks about Haiti or anything else. His opinion means no more to me than Joe Blow the cashier at the local 7-Eleven. Nor should it to anyone else.
As much as we all think his comments were insensitive
There is really no way to show he is incorrect until the world ends and we find out.
Yes, there is...
It's not just Pat who is wrong. There is no such thing as spiritual beings. Every single spiritual being has been created by mankind, not the other way around. And if anyone claims that non-existent spiritual beings can influence naturally occurring events, then they must also admit that the Greek gods were/are real as well.
People created their gods, every single one, including whichever one they believe in now...
There is a GOD
How would you know? Who created you?? or do you really think you just popped up on the earth by an explosion? You are not informed, have not had a personal relationship with God, therefore you are not qualified to offer such a statement.
There is a god? Really?
There is a god? Really? What about the hundreds of other gods that were made up? Zeus, Ra, Brahma, Shangdi, Jupiter, Eris, etc...
Point being, is man created those gods and goddesses, every single one. If it eases your fears to believe that you have found the one god out of the hundreds that wasn't created, then sleep well.
