Randy Wright seeking re-election to Norfolk council

Posted to: Elections News Norfolk

City Councilman W. Randy Wright, who pioneered light rail, led efforts to cut real estate taxes and has led redevelopment in Ocean View for nearly two decades, announced Tuesday night that he’s running for re-election in Ward 5.

Wright made the announcement at the Roosevelt Area Civic League, a group he headed 31 years ago. About 75 spectators, including Mayor Paul Fraim and Vice Mayor Anthony L. Burfoot, gave him a standing ovation after his announcement.

Wright played a central role in helping engineer the recent resignation of Michael Townes as head of Hampton Roads Transit because of light-rail cost overruns.

Wright  was elected to the council in 1992.

His only announced opponent, Granby High School assistant principal Tommy Smigiel, said Wright has not addressed flooding problems in Ocean View and failed to listen to residents. In a campaign announcement last year, Smigiel took a hard swipe at Wright.

“I believe it is time that Ocean View was represented by someone … that spends his time improving their neighborhoods and lives while protecting their pocketbooks, not selling them out to absentee slumlords and letting gangs and prostitutes run their communities.”

“I was offended” by Smigiel’s statement, Wright said Tuesday night. “Together, we’ve done a lot for this community,” he said listing  improvements, including the development of East Beach, dredging  Pretty Lake and closing  pawn shops.

He noted that Smigiel did not mention several neighborhoods along Little Creek Road, including Roosevelt Gardens, in his campaign announcement.

Holding up a copy of his 2009 calendar, Wright said he held 319 meetings regarding city business between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. As an assistant principal, Smigiel would not be available during those hours, Wright said.

“I’m very concerned about my constituency getting the representation they’ve had for so long.”

Smigiel said that  standard also would  disqualify  Burfoot, who works in the treasurer’s office; Councilwoman Theresa Whibley, a full-time physician; and Fraim, an attorney.

“Everyone has a right to run for City Council if they want to give back to their community,” Smigiel  said.

Smigiel has been campaigning for nearly four months. Wright has not. He applied to head the state’s rail agency and learned last week that the job had instead gone to former Congresswoman Thelma Drake. Wright said he decided to run over the weekend.

Wright said with Councilman Don Williams retiring, he was concerned about Ocean View losing influence on the council. “With the city facing its most challenging budget in my lifetime, this is a critical time,” he said.

Both Wright and Smigiel are Norview High School graduates. Smigiel, a graduate of Old Dominion University, was the 2008 Virginia Teacher of the Year, and a finalist for National Teacher of the Year.

Randy Wright this, Randy Wright that.

Randy Wright this, Randy Wright that.

Sounds like 'The Todd' on the show Scrubs. All this 'Randy Wright' name repetition looks more like someone trying to embarrass/ridicule him rather than support him.

another one!

Vote Randy Wright

no I do not live in ward 5 but I do have business interests there so I'm qualified to speak. I'll remain anonymous. If you weren't a newly created paid advertiser you would already know why. I work for one of those connected people. He's one of those people in the background. We do not agree politically but that's not what I'm there for. I'll speak my opinion and you can do what your paid to do....be a bot.

Still Feel The Same Voting For Randy Wright

Last night I posted a comment in support of Randy Wright. 24 Hours later still feeling the same. Randy Wright is always speaking of solutions when I hear him speak at events. Randy Wright does his best to make sure residents in Ward 5 have jobs and are employed. Taking care of your family, paying bills, having extra money to go out are the most important things to me. I want a person in office that will increase my chances of having work and being able to pay my bills. I want my standard of living to stay the same or get better. Randy Wright gives the people of Ward 5 security that we will have work and be able to pay bills. I'm happy that Randy Wright has an opponent because competition is good. At the end of the day I want to go to sleep knowing that I am working and can take care of my family. Randy Wright has proven himself to be a person that will give everyone the best chance of having work and taking care of their family. It's like the 1992 political phrase, "It's the economy, stupid!"

My thoughts

I believe that it is important that voters are educated on the issues before they vote. Right now, I am discussing the core issues voters feel are important to Ward 5. As I continue to knock on doors, I am hearing ideas, listening to concerns, and answering questions about my position on the issues facing the City of Norfolk. My platform will expand in the next few weeks to include specifics on these issues as well as others. Hopefully you will be home when I knock on your door, but if not please feel free to contact me through my web site www.smigielward5.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

ThanksVeryOld

Very Old, I am very flattered that my comments strike you to be so noticeable that you would conclude a firm of people trained in politics are writing them. I really am an everyday person living in Ocean View. I am not with a PR firm. I do feel strongly that Randy Wright is the best choice for Ward 5. I am voting for Randy Wright and will be urging everyone to do so. Very old, do you live in Ward 5? Do you go to any public meetings? If so, I would be happy to somehow arrange to introduce myself to you and meet you. I am flattered that my comments have generated such notice. Perhaps I will start a PR business! Very Old, your comment made me smile!

ITS OVER RANDY WRIGHT!

I think some of these posters have been smoking the crack they buy in OV. Randy Wright has done nothing for OV other than the social experiment at East Beach (50 million tax dollars). How many of the former residents of the new East Beach community live there. Try none. This area is exclusively for the wealthy and the rest of OV gets crap. Take a walk down Pleasent Avenue starting in East Beach. Very nice and safe. Cross OV Avenue continuing down Pleasent Ave and you move into ghetto conditions. Gangs, drugs, prositutes, literally 100 ft away. Take your children down to Pretty Lake Community Park, look at the condition, broken beer bottles and trash all over the place, and equipment from the 1960's and then tell us how much Randy has done for our communities. See what the slum lords get away with in EOV, mostly supporters of Randy. During the latest Nor'easter we had the Govenor, Del. Miller, Sen Northam, Mayor Fraim walking to see the damage. Where was Randy! High and dry in East Beach drinking wine and eating cheese.
As a HRT Light rail board member, I find it hard to believe that he did not know anything about the cost overruns. Poor leadership and manageme

spinky

what PR firm are you folks with? You set up the phony online accounts knowing this story would hit here today. Your blog entries sound just like what they are, jingles written by a committee. Randy these clowns just wasted your money today, they're so pathetically stiff it's comedy ....hahaha

Didn't even bother trying to sound like different people!

A spambot... Just droned on in the same writing style under every login-- probably programmed to repeat the ward # and same name so that, like an annoying TV ad, you are forced to remember. Marketing 101.

I can't wait for the cold calls. I hope spepart voter or respinky at least tries to disguise his voice and sound like different people. I promise to try not to laugh.

Makes you wonder about honesty and integrity though.

could it be more obvious??

I believe this blog has set a record for shrill voices. On last count there was 6. Hopefully that's also the most votes randy will see come election day.
