Islamist Web sites discuss attacks on U.S. warships

NORFOLK

A group that monitors Islamist Web sites has noted a disturbing trend - Internet posts from prominent contributors discussing attacks on U.S. warships.

Online threats against U.S. interests are not uncommon, and Internet propaganda is nothing new, said Steven Stalinsky, executive director of the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, which translated the posts. But he said the recent posts are more significant because they come in response to an official communique from al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, the terror group linked to the attempted bombing of a commercial American jetliner on Christmas. It urged followers to kill "Crusaders" on land, in the air and at sea.

One Dec. 30 posting on the forum Al-Falluja directed readers to gather intelligence on U.S. Navy targets.

"My Muslim brothers, do not underestimate the importance of any piece of information, as simple as it may seem; the mujahideen, the lions of monotheism, may be able to use it in ways that have not occurred to you."

The information that should be quietly gathered, the posting continues, includes "(the vessel's) name, the missions it is assigned; its current location, including notation of the spot in accordance with international maritime standards; the advantages of this naval unit; the number of U.S. troops on board, including if possible their ranks, and what state they are from, their family situation, and where their family members (wife and children) live; what kind of weapons they carry; the (vessel's) destination... the missions it has carried out; the (recommended) way to monitor it around the clock."

Stalinsky said the responses to that message fill 50 pages and include postings with pictures of U.S. warships.

Some are clearly no longer in service; other images include diagrams of aircraft carriers that are easily available on the Internet and photos posted on defense industry Web sites.

"It's important to know al-Qaida and offshoots are Internet-savvy," Stalinsky said. "They do an incredible job with their propaganda. You never know what is propaganda and what is real."

The Dec. 30 posting refers to the 2000 attack on the Norfolk-based destroyer Cole in Yemen, which killed 17 sailors.

Retired Vice Adm. John Morgan said families with loved ones aboard ships deployed to the Middle East shouldn't worry too much.

"Constant vigilance is the order of the day," said Morgan, who commanded the Enterprise Battle Group in 2001 and is now on the board of directors of the U.S. Naval Institute.

"They're well-equipped, they're well-trained, they rehearse anti-terrorism drills daily. I don't think there's any need for any greater alarm."

Lt. Nathan Christensen, a Navy spokesman at the Pentagon, said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service regularly warns commanders about potential threats to ships, and did so on Dec. 31 after seeing the latest Web comments.

The Navy also is reminding sailors of the importance of keeping secrets.

"Anyone who thinks our enemies don't monitor what our sailors, families and commands are doing via the Internet and social media had better open their eyes," Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Rick West said in an article posted Wednesday on the Navy's Web site.

"But we're not talking about 'loose lips sinking ships' anymore; it's more than that. Our enemies are advanced and as technologically savvy as they've ever been. They're looking for personal information about our sailors, our families and our day-to-day activities as well as ways to turn that information into maritime threats."

Well DUUUUUH

this reminds me of when we were fighting the USSR commies... except that we weren't infiltrated with commies that were ready to go after our families while we were deployed.

I have been saying for YEARS that having the stickers on our cars makes us targets. They should just swipe our ID cards to check to make sure the POV is authorized for base... as for retirees and dependents... maybe they need to have the same kind of ID cards so they can swipe the cards too

well duh

Of course we are being watched. We are at war. It is frustrating when so many fail to realize that we are at war. We are at war with militant islam - a certain group of islamists. Of course, they are developing intelligence around the clock, all day every day wherever their agents might happen to be. That's the nature of the business. we should not be paralyzed by this fact. It's the reality of life in the west today. The important point, in my opinion, is that we are at war. It is frustrating when folks who fail to appreciate the fact that we are at war. We have essentially two options - neither of which are especially pleasant. One option is to be overrun and defeated by militant islamists and to promptly purchase an acceptable copy of the Koran. The other option, the more American option, is to resist tyranny. To resist militant islamists is to fight like hell and to destroy them. Let there be no misunderstanding that the fight is going to be bloody and that our foe is committed and prepared to die for their cause. We must be prepared to fight in the same fashion if we are to stand any chance of defeating militant islamists. The time has come to be agressive and t

Under Bush...

Let's not forget all the domestic terrorist attacks that Bush had under his watch: The Anthrax Scare, The Shoe Bomber, The DC Sniper(s), The UNC campus attack. Why was no one calling out the Bush administration for being weak then, especially after MULTIPLE attacks, like some are calling Obama's administration now? Why was the country not up-in-arms about the Bush administration FAILING TO ACT? Because no matter how prepared we are, no matter how many safeguards are put in to place, you just can't plan for everything. As long as we have freedom of speech in this country, as long as people are allowed to express themselves freely and openly, there will always be an opportunity for someone to use that free speech to their advantage to possibly do harm. It is the world we live in, and attempting to place blame at one President's feet or another fixes nothing. In fact, could it be said that Bush policies were still in place when the most recent incident on the airplane took place? If so, does that mean that it would have been Bush's fault if the plane had indeed blown up?

Nice try.

Shoe Bomber was from UK. DC Sniper was a nut job acting alone not a terrorist.

But the one thing they ALL

But the one thing they ALL have in common? They are all Muslims! Coincidence? OK... whatever!

Learn from history!

I have known extremist Islams quest since I was old enough to read history! Am I supporting one faith over another? No! But I have yet to see a Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Buhdist or Voodoo Priestess suicide bomber! The next point is many of these any many other faiths would condemn such an act without the fear of retribution from said faith's militant wings. I also have yet to see hundreds of thousands of people celebrating in the streets when "we" kill anyone in war or not!
I do remember the celebrations all over the Islamic world on 9-11.

I belive in the Fire Triangle, remove an element and the fire will cease.
To extinguish this fire all we need to do is remove the common denominator we find in every incident. We live in peace and harmony here you live in war, hunger, ethnic strife and poverty there!
Problem solved.

gasoline on the fire

The stated purpose for the suicide attack on 9/11 was to put the US in a security posture and bankrupt our economy in a prolonged war of whack a mole
across the planet. Are you so sure your words do not please Al Queda and give them comfort?

Words and Comfort.

No they do not as I am what they know they cannot defeat in their quest. REALITY! They are winning utilizing the warped idealistic false sense of a harmonious utopia many in the west think can be created and maintained. Has not worked in 4500 years so why now?

Patton.

Patton was correct and no one listened either.
