50 to 60 vehicles involved in pileup on I-64 on Peninsula

NEWPORT NEWS

The largest of Wednesday morning’s multitude of accidents in whiteout snow conditions involved 50 to 60 vehicles but resulted in only minor injuries on westbound Interstate 64 near the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, the Newport News Fire Department reported.

Rescue workers responded to a 10 a.m. call for a trapped motorist, said Battalion Chief Jay Culpepper, the incident commander.

“The first units on the scene called back to say it looks like it’s going to be a mass-casualty situation,” Culpepper said.

Wrecked vehicles blocked both lanes, with some in ditches or the median, he said. Emergency crews were forced to walk the half-mile length of the pileup, checking on motorists as they went.

There were 29 vehicles in the first grouping, Culpepper said, with subsequent clumps of about 10 vehicles each. No one was trapped and “miraculously,” he said, injuries were minor – no broken bones, and his crews only transported eight to the hospital.

“It was easily 50 vehicles involved,” Culpepper said. “Some were totaled. Some were only fender-benders. … For that few people to be injured that slightly, we were very fortunate.”

Culpepper said what also impressed him was how those involved reacted.

“Everybody behaved incredibly well,” he said. “People were helping one another. No one was upset; no one was making a spectacle of themselves. … “It was nice to deal with that. … In the end, people were giving each other rides away from the scene.”

James City County handled “multiple accidents” on I-64 and feeder roads from about 9:15 to 11 a.m., including a jackknifed tractor-trailer, said District Chief Bob Ryalls. Stalled traffic prevented plows and salt-spreaders from doing their work, worsening an already bad situation, he said.

State Police responded to 70 incidents in the area, but were still tallying up reports and had few details late today, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a spokeswoman.

The almighty or the drivers themselves?

Actually God caused this accident by sending the snowstorm. We need to consult with Pat Robertson to determine what local human failing is responsible for bringing down the wrath of the almighty. On the other hand a more simpler cause could be that motorists were driving too fast for road conditions. Just because the speed limit is 65 doesn't mean you have to go this fast in blizzard whiteout like conditions.

The blame????

Blame the TV clown, blame the DOT .. all of that's absurd. This is clearly a case of natural selection on steroids!

Wow!

A positive story in today's world. It is very refreshing. And God Bless all thosse involved. It's nice to know we are still civil and caring.

Schools

I live in NN and what were they supposed to do? When I woke up, it was raining. When I left for work, there were flurries, but nothing was sticking, as predicted. The snow didn't start accumulating until after they got to school. Since it stopped snowing 3 hours ago, they are better off keeping them in school for the day. They shouldn't have had off Wednesday and Thursday last week.

I cannot believe the schools

I cannot believe the schools on the Peninsula are open in this weather. At the very least they need to close now before the roads get worse this afternoon. As usual they have put financial concerns above the safety of the students in their care. I hope everyone keeps this in mind during the next local school board elections. It will be a tragedy if even one student is seriously injured or killed due to the school boards' incompetence.

Weather Guessers

That's because if you watched Jon Cash this morning, you wouldn't have imagine any snow accumulation at all. I believe he said it would be mostly rain with some light snow showers, but "folks, don't worry, it won't be sticking to the roads. In fact any accumulation on the ground won't last long at all because of the rain."

Your crazy

Your first mistake was listening to the "snow flake" from WAVY. He is more concerned in playing silly schoolgirl games than forecasting accurate weather.

It has been accumlating

It has been accumlating since 8:40 when I got to work! This article is 2 hours late! Per one of our drivers, it is like a skating rink on 64 with cars just sliding into one another, not knowing what they are doing!
Good luck out there.

think about it

with the Gilmerton bridge having lifts at 6:45 and 7 you just might as well say that the lift at 6:45 will be an extended one. It takes several minutes to close the bridge and much more for traffic to move now that it is only one lane.they might get 20 cars across between lifts.
Sounds like great planning for the morning rush hour. Why is it that the first ship can not delay for 15 min. ?

Well if VDOT's got a hand in

Well if VDOT's got a hand in it......I'll be nice :)
