Bill allowing concealed weapons in bars advances

RICHMOND

The perennial "guns in bars" bill is on the march again, and this year it has a friend in the governor's mansion.

Del. Todd Gilbert's bill, HB505, would let Virginians with the required permits carry concealed weapons into restaurants and clubs that sell alcohol. It was approved Tuesday by the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee and now advances to the House floor. If passed there, it will go to the Senate.

A similar measure was passed by the General Assembly last year but vetoed by then-Gov. Timothy M. Kaine. Gov. Bob McDonnell has expressed support for the idea.

Gilbert, R-Page County, amended the bill this year to prohibit gun-toting bar patrons from consuming alcohol on the premises.

Gun-rights groups back the measure, while gun-control advocates and the restaurant lobby oppose it.

HB 505

This bill is stupidity on steroids. The NRA is truly getting a bargain as they only gave Del. Gilbert $750.00. The NRA gave $2,950 to Del. Marshall for his equally ignorant proposal to allow university professors to carry firearms on Virginia campuses. Del. Marshall is still in favor of this ill conceived legislation even in light of the killing of three professors in Alabama by one of their own. Numerous studies have revealed the fallacy of armed civilians, trained and screened or not, preventing tragedies like that at the Alabama university. They are more likely to injure innocent victims or be injured themselves by their own firearm.

little boys and their toys

It must make some men feel pretty big to walking around with a gun. Sadly, they are still little boys with their toys. Maybe one of these days they will grown up!

Envy

Penis envy is such a sad, sad thing. There's no reason to be ashamed of who you are Gertz, and being a woman doesn't preclude you from effectively using the tools of self defense. That's what makes guns so effective: a 100 lb woman can use one to effectively negate the physical advantage that a 250 lb male assailant naturally has over them.

Airfield Shooting Club is hosting a Women on Target shooting clinic in May. You can come out and empower yourself by learning a new skill in a non-threatening environment. Maybe then you'll be able to get over the irrational and paranoid fear of law abiding gun owners that you suffer from.

Gertz

And we're still waiting for you to grow up. However, we have all come to the conclusion that will never happen.

keith

Did you take a poll and I didn't know about it? BTW spend more time worrying about yourself, and let me hve the freedom to speak.

I never said you couldn't speak

You generally use broad terms when describing 'little boys with their toys'. You assume that those of the male gender who support this legislation are something other than mature grown up human beings. Therefore I have concluded that your comment included me indirectly. You are free to coment on this blog and I am free to rebutt your comments. That's the way it works Gertz.

Same "old" name calling.

Can't wait to hit the bar !

Nothing better than being in a room with a drunk person carrying around a gun & just hoping for the best !! Woo hoo ! Of course, we must not forget that they will have a license and we just have to hope that they don't decide to take a Nutty one day and start shooting after having a bit too many !

I'm sorry, why is it okay for someone other than a police officer to bring a gun into a public place ???

Sigh.

I'll speak slowly so those that have comprehension problems can follow along:

The new law would make it illegal to drink while carrying a firearm.

If someone is willing to break that law and drink while carrying, what makes you think they're following the law now and leaving their guns at home?

Either they are law abiding and will follow the new law, or they are not law abiding and are probably breaking the current laws.

It makes you feel better than anyone with a concealed gun in a bar today is already, by definition, a criminal? Or do you presume that, because you can't see it, no one is carrying a gun? Don't be naive.

Not to mention the fact that, under current law, it is already legal to carry guns into bars, they just can't be concealed...and under current law, people can legally drink alcohol while openly armed. By making it illegal to drink, the law you oppose would be an improvement in terms of "mixing guns and alcohol".

Can't wait to hit the bar!

Sharon, it's called the Second Amendement of the bill of rights

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

That's why it's okay and until the U.S. Constitution is amended (and that will be when pigs fly) it will continue to be that way. The second amendment doesn't say the people can only bear arms at home, or only with special permission from the government, it says under no circumstances this right will not be infringed. I don't know how much clearer this can be. The Nazi's during the 1930's did exactly what you suggest (when only the police, read Nazi party, carried guns) and look how that turned out
