The guided missile destroyer Cole will deploy today from Norfolk Naval Station.
The deployment was pushed from Friday to today because of the weekend storm.
Chief Petty Officer Scott Boyle, a spokesman for the Navy's Surface Force Atlantic, said the Cole will head to the Mediterranean and Arabian seas, where it will conduct maritime security operations alongside ships from other navies for the next seven months. Maritime security operations is the Navy's way of saying "pirate duty" -- patrolling busy shipping lanes off the Horn of Africa where pirates frequently attempt to commandeer commercial vessels.
The Norfolk-based Cole has a crew of about 270 sailors. Cmdr. Edward Devinney is the ship's commanding officer.

Bad weather
Probably a good call by the squadron commander to keep the ship inport with the impending Nor'easter bearing down. No need to stress the hull any more than it already had. Besides, I'm sure the crew will enjoy the extra weekend at home with their families.
Sure seems
as though they could have left. Who knows what Monday will bring and they COULD have been ahead of the storm, that is if there is one.
determined warrior
Oh COLE, be true to your nickname "Determined Warrior" and steadfast in honor of your namesake!
Sail true and fast, and keep the torch of freedom burning for all of us!
Sailors of COLE, please keep my ship safe from harm, be swift and accurate in response to threats, and bring the mighty COLE safely home again!
