An officer was injured in a pit bull attack while responding to a domestic disturbance call Sunday afternoon, according to a Newport News police news release.
Shortly after noon, police were called to the 4600 block of Madison Ave. for a fight between a husband and wife, the release said. When the woman opened the door an adult male pit bull rushed past her and attacked the lead officer, biting him on his left hand and forearm. The officer drew his gun and fired twice, striking the dog.
The male owner of the home exited and began to assault the officer, the release said. Police said he was under the influence of alcohol and used pepper spray to stop his attack.
Willie James Sims, 46, was arrested and charged with assault of a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct while intoxicated, drunk in public, obstruction of justice, assault and battery on a family member and a summons for dangerous or vicious dog. He was in the Newport News City Jail without bond.
The officer was taken to a hospital and treated for the bite wounds, which were not considered life-threatening.
