Testing irregularities at four schools and suggestions of impropriety have been of “grave concern” to the school board and Superintendent Stephen C. Jones, according to a letter he posted to the public schools’ Web site Thursday.
Dreamkeepers Academy, an award-winning magnet school, failed to test 16 of 160 students in at least one of four portions of the Standards of Learning tests, The Virginian-Pilot reported this week. Northside and Lafayette-Winona middle schools and Campostella Elementary also have had testing irregularities.
City Council members said Wednesday that it’s time to disclose any other accreditation irregularities, and one called for an audit to review whether the division is being run efficiently.
“We have leapt to audit our procedures, with assistance from the Virginia Department of Education and a panel of experts that we commissioned,” Jones said in the letter. “Based on what we have found so far, we have taken a number of strong steps to tighten our district-wide testing procedures.”
Jones wrote that more actions would be coming as the panel makes recommendations and that it is his personal goal to ensure that Norfolk public schools never again face testing issues of this type and magnitude.
He announced last month that he would retire in June.

In 1980, SOL had a very different meaning!! We had bigger classes, couldn`t wear shorts, had very few teacher work days! The NEA and who ever came up with SOLs has got to go!
Red between the lines on this one
“We have leapt to audit our procedures, with assistance from the Virginia Department of Education and a panel of experts that we commissioned,” Jones said in the letter. “Based on what we have found so far, we have taken a number of strong steps to tighten our district-wide testing procedures.”
Translation:
The commonwealth was called in and found the "irregularities" that forced us to publicly acknowledge the cheating and take remedial action directed by Virginia.
"Based on what we have found so far" means there are more revelations to come Norfolk.
Wonder what is next?
ELECT the Norfolk school board so there is accountability for the students.
Correction
"It's: Read between the lines on this one"
