Norfolk-based sailors promoted for combat actions

Two locally based sailors serving in Afghanistan recently were promoted through the Combat Meritorious Advancement Program.

Leigh R. Warrick, who serves with Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center in Norfolk, earned a field promotion to petty officer 2nd class, according to a news release. Warrick received the promotion for recent actions in attacks on his base and his work on the Pakistan border.

Also, Robert Wagner, assigned to Nuristan Provincial Reconstruction Team force protection, was awarded a combat action ribbon and promoted to petty officer 3rd class. His home unit is the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman.

Wagner helped repel an enemy attack on an observation post in Nuristan province in November, firing 800 rounds from his machine gun.

Doctor recognized as a role model

Capt. Marlene DeMaio, medical director of Portsmouth Naval Medical Center’s Portsmouth Orthopedic Clinic, has won the “Building Stronger Female Physician Leaders in the Military Health System” award at the 2010 Military Health System Conference.

The award is designed to recognize outstanding female physicians who serve as exemplary role models for others, according to a news release.
