Rivalry week
OK, it's not exactly original, but does anyone have a better name for ODU's slate this week? (And next, for that matter?)
After dispatching William and Mary Wednesday night (game story here), Monarch Nation turns its eyes to VCU Saturday.
These are no longer Eric Maynor and Anthony Grant's Rams. Both have moved on to bigger things.
But that old ODU-VCU animus remains, right?
We'll find out Saturday at the Siegel Center.
"Is that the next game?" coach Blaine Taylor quipped at Wednesday's post-game press conference. Then he made a point about rivalries, and ODU.
"The unusual thing about this job when I took it is usually you've got a rival, and you've got one," he said. "If you're at Oregon, it's Oregon State. Here, you've got about five rivals and you better show up at all these rivalry games because there's a lot of history between these schools because of their proximity and some of the great games that have taken place."
Point taken. With JMU and George Mason looming after VCU, maybe "Rivalry Week" doesn't cut it. No, since we're talking about the Colonial, after all, let's go really old school - Olde English school - and call this thing what it is:
Rivalry Fortnight.
It's all yours, ESPN.

Rivalry week
ESPN is promoting Rivalry week but Not showing ODU-VCU.
In 2005, 6 and 8 ODU - VCU was part of Rivalry week on ESPN and provided great theater.
This year the Norfolk game on Feb 27 is an ESPN Wildcard Game along with Mason vs Northeastern. If the standings stay the way they are that is Mason, Northeastern and ODU win the dame number of conference games the rest of the way, Mason - Northeastern will be for the Conference title Tiebreakers will drop ODU to second and possibly third. Guess which game ESPN will carry.
ODU has not been on ESPN U this year. In 2007 we had two appearences.
For some reason ESPN has been more interested in Mason, VCU, Northeastern and Hofstra.
Rivalry Week
Maybe the reason why ESPN is more interested in VCU than ODU is because you guys lose the big games. Case in point: VCU 70-ODU 58. ODU never even showed up to play the second half of the game. Nobody wants to see the lady monarchs play against a men's team. Also, don't worry about ODU fighting for that number 1 CAA spot come the end of the month...cause they won't be in the race.
