A pair of rising stars were on display Saturday in the Tidewater Conference basketball finals at Norfolk Christian.
Junior James McAdoo fueled the top-seeded Ambassadors boys team with 24 points in a 66-54 victory over No. 3 Cape Henry.
“They definitely look to me to set the pace,” said McAdoo, who has committed to play at North Carolina. “But it opens it up for other guys late in the game.”
The Ambassadors sped to a 37-24 first-half lead. McAdoo totaled 15 points at halftime, including 10 of his team’s 14 points in the second quarter.
Mike Murray drilled a 3-pointer to open the second half. Moments later, McAdoo threw down a thunderous dunk to stretch the lead 18 points.
But the Dolphins slowed play down by going to a zone defense and chipped away at their deficit by pounding the ball down low to Terrell Allen and Chris Campbell. They trailed 44-40 to start the fourth quarter.
“Our game is to push the tempo – we’re better on the open floor,” Norfolk Christian coach Michael Allen said. “I must have aged a couple years on the bench. James forced two or three (shots) in a row, they got defensive stops – the bottom just fell out.”
But McAdoo hit a 12-footer and Murray stole the ball for an uncontested layup as the Ambassadors surged to an eight-point lead to start the final period.
Cape Henry fired back with a pair of free throws by Allen and a dunk by Demetrious Pollard to stay within four points.
Mario Nixon then hit a shot, was fouled and converted a free throw to spark a 7 to 1 run. He scored all seven for the Ambassadors.
In the girls opener, freshman Adrienne Motley finished with 40 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to power fourth-seeded Hampton Roads Academy to an 81-43 win over No. 3 Norfolk Collegiate.
Motley’s performance comes on the heels of a career-high 55-point performance against top-seeded Norfolk Christian in Friday’s semifinals.
“She’s quite the gifted basketball player,” said Oaks coach Suzanne Midkiff of Motley, who was named the TCIS Player of the Year and tournament MVP. “I was just telling one of my assistants, 'Great, we have to deal with her for another three years.’”
Caitlyn Unsworth hit six treys en route to a 26-point night for the Navigators.
Markell Smith had 14 points, followed by Olivia Smith with 11 more for Norfolk Collegiate, which led 9-7 to open the game, but was then outscored 14-0.
“I think that took the wind out of our girls’ sails,” Midkiff said.

...James has been at N
...James has been at N Christian since K, with his name now that helps attract attention to our school and our team. The Lord has blessed NCH with these kids b/c they are great kids and this is obvious when you watch the way they carry themselves both on and off of the court. Dr. Miller put up with a lot more out of his coaches then what Coach Allen has ever done. In response to lowwagecity....get your facts straight before you post something b/c Coach Allen NEVER threw a clipboard against the wall, where did that come from?....your making this out to be a bigger thing then what it was at all!!! Funny how people look the other way when the other TCIS coaches go crazy yelling at their players and at the refs and the refs don't do anything either but yet a Norfolk Christian coach can do something just to try and get his players attention and people are ready to point fingers and put him down.
foul
when are these refs going stop with the kid glove treatment on mcadoo. the other kids can barely look at him and a foul is called, hes going to be in for a rude awakening when he moves on to the acc.
Norfolk Christian coach's behavior-winning is not everything
Did everyone notice when Michael Allen [head coach] threw his little tantrum in the third qtr? He was barking at his players as they brought the ball up, which distracted them and McAdoo bounced the ball off of a teammates head for a turnover and layup by Cape Henry. Allen slapped the floor and stormed aroung and then slammed the clipboard against the wall and broke it into pieces and was extrememly angry in the timeout. I was taken aback especially after the pre-game prayer that encouraged everyone to be calm cool and collected. A role model in this position should be reprimanded by the headmaster for such behavior. Norfolk Christian I hope you are listening.
lowwagecity
You obviously don't remember Ed Willis. Coach Allen is a Teddy Bear in comparison. Or your the parent of a kid who was cut from the team. Coach Allen has passion for the game, something you obviously no nothing about. In my playing days, Dr. Miller would have loved having Allen as the varsity coach.
Thank you Madpig94...I'm tired of people always picking on NCH
You are exactly right! I know for a fact that Ed Willis also coached the girls teams and he was just as hard on the girls but yet he was a great basketball coach and great players continued to go out for his teams despite the fact that he would constantly scream and yell etc. So obviously we sports minded people know that this can comes along with athletics especially in heated games. Thank you for sticking up for Coach Allen b/c he does have a real passion for the game, loves his kids and knows the capabilities of his players. And at this crucial point in the TCIS Championship they were not doing what the staff was asking of them so this was his way of waking them up before they gave away one of their biggest goals they had worked so hard for all this season. And those that were there saw that it worked! If he hadn't done that then who knows what the outcome of the game might have been b/c after that the guys regrouped and came together. In response to lowwagecity, I'm sure he knows that winning isn't everything but I'm sure he is also a believer in putting forth your best effort in all that you do and if Coach Allen had just sat back watching the guys start to give the ga
Ed Willis
Great Coach? Are you kidding? When he had talent he was good like any other coach would be. If he had to work on it and "Coach" he did not have a clue. A great coach is one that can get the most out of each and every player to be the best player they can be and in turn be the best team possible. Next you are going to tell me that NBA coaches are great coaches.
Ed Willis did not recruit
Ed Willis did not recruit players. I attended a game last year as a former player at Norfolk Christian. I was shocked at the way the fans were allowed to act. This was not the same school I attended. I will never attend another game at Norfolk Christian. Dr. Miller would have never allowed any of this to happen at a Norfolk Christian game. Dr. Miller would not approve of Mr. Allen's actions and other adults sitting at the end of the bench. The students were out of control. As far as this parent possibly getting their kid cut it would not matter because Mr. Allen only plays 5 players maybe 6 sometimes, so even if his kid was on the team he would not get a chance to play. I have spoken to friends who attended and played ball at Norfolk Collegiate and Norfolk Acedemy back in the 80s and they were appauled at the behavior of the fans at Norfolk Christian. I think Norfolk Christian needs to step back for a minute and look at the message they are sending out to the public. Winning at all costs is not always the answer for success. Norfolk Christian's values have been compromised in the last few years. I hope the Headmaster listens and can see what has happened to NCHS!
You are right a lot has changed in the TCIS
I'm trying to figure out why you are commenting on Mr. Allen's actions when you stated that you went to a game last year but would never go back to a game at N. Christian. So you weren't even at the TCIS Championship game this year b/c it was at Christian but yet you are commenting about the coaches actions and you weren't even there???!!! So you don't even know what happened...lowwagecity doesn't even have it right, he never threw a clipboard at the wall! What are you talking about people sitting on the bench....the only people that are on the bench are players, coaches, managers and a trainer. Yes, you are right in that the TCIS has changed since you played...it changed when about 10 years ago N Collegiate, Cape Henry and N Academy started going out and recruiting players both local and foreign. N Christian does things the right way....they do not recruit. By having a player with such a big name as James McAdoo it has led kids to N Christian! And for the record, James has been at N Christian since Kindergarten!!!!
No one said Ed Willis did recruit, what r u implying?
In response to vabeach4life67 it is so sad that you are taking sides with NA and NCollegiate fans over sticking up for your own school. What have some of your school bball records been broken by these kids and you are upset? It's obvious that once N Christian begins having success this is when people start being negative towards not just certain teams and coaches but the entire school itself. You obviously have not been to any N Collegiate games and seen Markey coach or did you just look the other way when the kids from that school ripped down posters from the N Christian gym walls and then ran around the court with it and tore it up last year during their celebration....where have you been when all of this is going on but yet your going to put down your own school.....SAD! What about N Collegiate bringing in Lithuanians all those years just for basketball? And do you know that NA and Collegiate this year are not taking their boys basketball team to states just b/c they don't want to go....what kind of attitude is that to have and not fair to the boys on their teams. Christian does not recruit, God has led these kids to NCH and it helps when you have a kid like James McAdoo t
