SUFFOLK
The city will hold a public meeting tonight to talk about the mysterious smell off U.S. 58 at the entrance to Suffolk.
Residents have been noticing and complaining about the odor since late fall. “The source of the odor has not been identified yet,” city spokeswoman Debbie George said on Saturday.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Nansemond River High School auditorium. Representatives from area companies and facilities will be there, George said.
City officials and company representatives will explain what has been done to determine the source, and talk about what to do next, she said.

CHINESE DRYWALL....
I think the drywall explanation is very reasonable and I agree with the other person about the purpose of having a meeting. It may be time to call in the environmental protection agency or something close to it to seek the root of the problem. Why pay all those well knowledged city officials overtime, when Suffolk can just pay an expert to determine the nature of the problem. I sometimes wonder about the capability of our officials and how they run things, the people do not want to sit down and rehash old information, they want/need answers and solutions.
Suffolk, let the people handle it if you cannot!
Smell
Its probably the police doing undercover work to catch the really hardened criminals buying wild rabbits. idiots.
Go for a Walk
The only way they are going to find it; is to go for a walk, and explore.
You are not going to find it holding a meeting inside a building.
WHEN
14 hours later and still waiting approval?
The real stench...
The real stench is that the Local government either let the landfill be built too close to existing homes or allowed new developments to be built within range of it. Who profited? Too often City officials are nothing more than greedy businessmen that fool the public into voting for them. Be careful who you vote for! Make sure they don't sell real estate or loan money to those that do!
The Smell....
The smell is coming from the political leaders in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.......terminate the yo-yo's in office and the smell might go away.
more than likely
More than likely this is one more mess the people will have to pay for because our inept quasi-governmental SPSA thought they could close these some of these landfill cells themselves. Yes, even though their workforce had no experience with this type of work.
"But during more inspections in June, the state noted that the site still had numerous problems -- "void of vegetation, landfill liner exposed, storm water system not completed, no signs posted for closure, landfill not baited for rodents, erosion noticed, no recorded change in deed to facility property," according to records."
"The closure project got off to a rocky start in 2006 when SPSA decided to do the work itself, even though its staff had no experience with such an effort." By Scott Harper The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va.

Government offices
What happens when they find out the stench is coming from the Suffolk government offices?
Da Smell
The same thing Suffolk City government does when something smells fishy with they way they do business, either do nothing or try to cover it up. Why on earth would anyone think they would do anything different?
Chinese Drywall....
the horrible stench did not begin until after the local supplier of Chinese Drywall dumped his product at John C. Holland. I am a Chinese Drywall victim and drive on 58 daily, the same pungent stench that you all smell is the same horrific TOXIC smell that has corroded and destroyed my home and hundreds of others in this area. The people who live near there have all complained of the same symptoms that we have faced living in our toxic homes. The supplier dumped the drywall and the dump owner allowed them to dump the toxic drywall before there was any federal protocol for dumping!! The government is still working on what to do with this toxic mess!!
We, the victims could/can afford our homes BUT we can not harm our children/spouses/loved ones any longer by living in the toxic dumps that our homes have been made into! We have been dealing with this for almost a year, we have gone to DC, we have been to Richmond there has been no help for us. I hope Suffolk helps these homeowners that are being affected!
