Transportation in and around Hampton Roads can sometimes be tricky because of the many waterways in the region. It's important to plan your trip ahead of time or you could find yourself sitting in traffic!

Norfolk International Airport

Amtrak

Greyhound Buses

Hampton Roads Transit buses
Offers service in seven cities: Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach.
Most fares are $1.50 for adults, $1 for those 18 and younger, 75 cents for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Children under 38 inches tall ride for free. www.gohrt.com, (757) 222-6100

Norfolk Electric Transit buses 
NET buses carry passengers for free through downtown Norfolk, with a weekday route that includes Granby and Main streets and City Hall and a weekend route from Waterside Drive to the Chrysler Museum of Art, including a Harbor Park stop on game days. Hours: 6:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon-midnight Saturday and noon-8 p.m. Sunday

VB Wave 
These shuttles go along Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach from Rudee Inlet  to 40th  Street.  The route is available daily May 1 through Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. in 15-minute frequencies. Two other routes available daily Memorial Day through Labor Day run to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and the Hilltop shopping area and Lynnhaven Mall. Fare is $1, 50 cents for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Children under 38 inches tall ride for free.  (800) VABEACH

The MAX 
The Metro Area Express offers regional express bus service for commuters, with park-and-ride lots and routes connecting all of Hampton Roads. Fare is $3, $1.50 for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Children under 38 inches tall ride for free. www.gohrt.com

Portsmouth Loop 
These run every 30 minutes through downtown Portsmouth. Free.  www.gohrt.com

The Tide Light Rail
A light rail line, The Tide, with a 7.4-mile east-to-west route through Norfolk is to begin service in May 2011.  Upon completion, the system is to have 11  stations and four park-and-ride locations. Check out our interactive map of the proposed stops.

Ferry service
To cross the Elizabeth River in style, HRT provides a ferry service between downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth. Experience the paddle-wheel ferry for $1.50 a ride, 75 cents for senior citizens an those with disabilities. The ferry operates every 30 minutes with 15-minute service during the summer at peak times on weekends. It's also wheelchair accessible. www.gohrt.com, (757) 222-6100
