UVA to play an intrasquad scrimmage at Foreman Field? It's not a done deal yet

Jumping on the misinformation highway these days reminds me of the old game that was played in elementary school where everyone sat in a circle and someone told a secret to someone else and the secret made it's way around the circle to see how the story changed.

Usually, by the time it made way around the class, a bluebird sitting on a powerline became a pink elephant jumping into a swimming pool.

So when a Big Blue Club member emailed me to ask if it was true that Virginia was coming to Foreman Field to scrimmage the Monarchs on March 25th ... ya know, there's just so much misinformation in that sentence that you should immediately scratch it from your recall.

In other words, IT'S NOT HAPPENING.

So how did this rumor start? One person told me they read it on Twitter. Another said they'd heard it from someone in the know at Virginia. And of course anyone who heard anything ran to the messages boards known as the CAAZone and MonarchNation and started messaging about it as if it had been signed into law by Obama himself.

Here's what is happening: Virginia is trying to make some goodwill appearances around the state and, yes, they called ODU about maybe playing an intrasquad scrimmage at Foreman Field this spring. That means Virginia players would scrimmage against Virginia players.

I called ODU. Here's what athletic director Dr. Jim Jarrett said:

"UVA  has indicated they are looking at ways to have a presence in different areas around the state and have made an inquiry into the availability of our facility. There have been no other discussions beyond that initial phone call."

   There. That's where it stands.

GOOD IDEA

I think its a good idea for UVA to scrimmage at Powhatan Field. Its good for the area, and may be helpful for recruitment in the 757. Just face it, there's a lot a kids who would rather play for an ACC team of UVA or Va Techs callibur, than ODUs, maybe that's why ODU doesn't want the game played there, maybe UVA should pay for using the facility, but it would be exciting to see a nice division 1 team in the neighborhood, even if it is, just for a practice.

Tidbit

Logan Heastie will transfer to ODU.

Not so fast. Possible change

Not so fast. Possible change of heart. Staying at WVU.

Home and Home

The only way we should allow them to play at our stadium is if they pay a fair amount above and beyond costs to open facility and they schedule a home and home series with us for men's basketball. Basketball - not football. If they don't play a home and home for men's basketball - they can go elsewhere - we don't need the hassle.

the hassle? get over

the hassle? get over yourself, they're coming. shame i had to read about this in the daily press first. http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt-virgiia-spring-football,0,1730810.story

Preparing stories for the reader

Sure, we could have copy-and-pasted Virginia's press release and left it at that. But I decided to instead provide the reader with a more complete picture, not a press release, and that took a little time to prepare.
